Synthetic Motor Oil

I have a 2015 Versa Note (S-Plus, HR16DE engine) which I took to the dealership this week for its first oil change at 5000 miles. I wanted to start using synthetic motor oil so I asked that they use 5W-30 Mobile 1 but they instead used 0W-20 Mobile 1. Is this a problem? They also used a Nissan oil filter rather than the Mobile 1 filter I requested. I can't find anything in the Owner's Manual about synthetic motor oil or viscosity recommendations if one switches to synthetic oil. For others who have switched to synthetic motor oil, what viscosity do you use?

5w-30 Mobile 1 Synthetic w/ Mobile 1 filter here. Stuff is so cheap right now under $30 for both, just have to shop for deals local. Crazy Nissan used the wrong weight, I bet if you brought it in and did that yourself they would go ape on you. 0w-20 Synthetic is an awesome oil also, just switch it back at your next oil change. I ran that oil in my 2011 Honda Fit Sport, get this 12,000 miles between oil changes!!!!!! I think I only changed the oil 5 times with 52,000 miles before it was totaled from hail. Good oil for sure. Purolator One filters are the best IMO, I use them when I can find them. Purolator One filters are king and built tank tough!!!! Mobile 1 is my second brand of choice. When it really comes down to it we change our oil so often in Nissans that the oils today are far superior in longevity that the oil will out last the 5K requirement. Kinda wasting money, but I'm used to the benefit of running descent oil. Q

0W20 is not *good oil* for your Versa Note. It is not recommended for that engine.

The dealer screwed up and you should return, with your owner's manual in hand, demanding they flush the 0W20 and put 5W30 in the crankcase. It's that simple.
0W20 goes in engines that require 0W20, not in engines that require 5W30. Synthetic or not, recommended weight (grade) has to match what is in the manual.

The owner's manual also states :

troleum based oils may be used and meet all specifications and require-
ments necessary to maintain the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
Key word there is warranty. 0W20 might void your powertrain warranty because it is not suited to your engine. If the dealer tries to tell you otherwise and refuses to replace your oil free of charge, contact Nissan directly. ASAP.

I second @Mark 's suggestion. It would be better if you got the record that you asked them to use a specific synthetic oil and they deliberately used something else. Hope you get this rectified!

As long as you had the work done at the dealership, you will not have a problem regarding the warranty. Just make sure to keep your paperwork in case of an issue.

As far as the filter goes, if you have work done at the dealer, they will be using Nissan parts. If they install anything other than a Genuine Nissan part, and it fails, they can always say that the after market part caused the issue. As for oil changes, I am always getting offers from my dealership regarding oil changes that cost $19.95, plus they wash the car before they return it to you. I have already had the engine in my wifes 2009 versa replaced under warranty because of a piston slap, and there was NO QUESTION regarding whether proper oil changes were done....It was all there in their computer.

I'd like to think we all deserve the correct oil in our engines, no matter where the liability lies if the engine dies as a consequence of improper maintenance. If we let dealers put wrong parts or wrong oil in our engines because they'll fix it if it breaks because you can prove they &?%$ed up, then what happens to the poor sap who buys your car used ? What happens if you buy such a poorly maintained car and get stuck with replacing a blown engine ? No thanks. Dealerships charge an arm and a leg for repairs, they claim they are the best to work on their cars, so... they should deliver the goods and AT LEAST put the right oil in the crankcase. Period.

*Nissan parts* as you put it are often the same parts we buy at any auto parts store, with a diffrerent sticker on them. *Nissan oil filter* is made by one of the major filter manufacturers like Wix, Fram or Purolator. So let's not go crazy with the *genuine* bull, and just put approved parts on your car, whoever makes them.

Not all dealers offer oil change deals. Our 2 dealers don't.

Sorry to hear you had an engine fail on a 2009 Versa. Shouldn't happen, really.

UPDATE -- Thanks everyone for your replies. After I posted my question here I made some phone calls. The first call was to Nissan USA. Since there is nothing in my Owners Manual regarding synthetic oil, I asked what viscosity of synthetic oil Nissan recommends for the HR16DE engine. The young lady couldn't find any recommendation. I asked if there is a service bulletin regarding synthetic oil which has been sent to the dealerships. She couldn't find one. I asked to be transferred to the tech department. Apparently, there isn't one.

My next call was to ExxonMobil's tech department. The young man said they recommend 5W-30 Mobile 1, not 0W-20, for the HR16DE engine. He said it is OK to drop from 5W to 0W, but they would not recommend dropping the upper number from 30 to 20.

My next calls were to the service departments at five other dealerships in Southern California. Two recommended 5W-30 synthetic oil, two recommended 0W-20, and the last one said they don't recommend using synthetic oil in a 2015 Versa Note.

I took my car back to the dealership and had a long talk with the service department manager. He finally admitted that they should have used 5W-30 Mobile 1. Apparently, the Altima and some of the other Nissan models call for 0W-20 synthetic oil, and the parts department gave the service tech the wrong oil. They changed my oil and filter and I left the next morning for Northern California.

My car sat in my parent's garage for a week and I drove my Dad's car during my visit. When I checked the oil in my car before driving back to Southern California, I was shocked to see it had been overfilled by almost a quart. I stopped at Napa Nissan and they verified the overfill and removed the excess oil through the dip stick tube.

All of the work was documented at the two dealerships. Hopefully, the mistakes won't cause any long-term problems.
