Questions bout ODB2 and P0172

Two questions for you guys this morning.

1. My 2011 Versa keeps throwing a P0172 error code at me. It's really odd because it will fix itself sometimes and stay off for about a week then come back. It's funny because every time the error code light comes back on, it happens within the same 1/4 mile stretch of road every single time! I've tried using a bottle of SeaFoam but that only helped until that tank of gas was gone. I've also checked for vacuum hose leaks, and switched from mid-grade to low-grade fuel after the first time I got this error code. Why would this error code keep popping up after it goes away?

2. I have an ODB2 scanner tool which was a gift to me. It had worked previously for about 3 months and I thought it had broken and quit working but I tested it on my wifes 06 Trailblazer this morning and it worked fine. However when plugged in to my ODB2 port it will refuse to connect. How can I diagnose my ODB2 system and see why it won't work on my car anymore? The scanner tool powers up just fine but I am not getting a link to the system.

As far as the scanner goes, you might want to stop in to some of your local auto supply stores that will scan your car for free. If the odb2 port works with their scanner, then it is possible that yours is not working properly. You can also try to use some "electronics cleaner" on the plug of your scanner to insure that it is making a proper connection to the port.

A code P0172 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters can cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled.

Good luck!!!

FSM:

Is car difficult to start (also)?

Yes, fuel pressure, filter, FI.

No, exhaust gas leak (before cat), intake leak (after MAF), A/F sensor, fuel pressure, MAF, FI, in that order.

Let us know what you're finding.

No difficulty in starting. The car runs perfectly! If it weren't for the CEL light I wouldn't even know there was a problem. I do have the rotten eggs smell so it could possibly be an exhaust leak causing the problem? I'll be putting it up on supports tomorrow and having a look underneath.

A smell of sulfur coming from a car's exhaust pipe is a good sign that there is a problem with the catalytic converter, according to Cars Direct. The smell, similar to rotten eggs, indicates that the sulfur present in gasoline is not being converted to odorless sulfur dioxide.

A P0172 is a rich code, the cat will smell because it has to work harder than normal to burn the excess fuel. It means cat is working at that time but even a few minutes of too rich can melt the cat guts to quickly kill it. Need to fix that quick.

Most MPFI issues make lean code or 171, few cause too rich. MAP, MAF, pressure regulator, leaky injector, misfire in engine can do it.

Lots of the time a scanner not working when it does on others is simply a pin contact issue. Gotta have ALL needed pins working or she no worky.
