2012, myriad of problems

I'm desperately trying to help my bf get his 2012 versa running (it has about 113k on it). He has pretty much no car knowledge, and I've only ever dealt with vw's.

About a month and a half ago, the car would randomly decide to not start, or would start up, then rumble and stall. He has a jump box, and it would start (and stay running) once used. Then a couple weeks later, he said it became more frequent and started trying to stall at stoplights. He admitted that he needed an oil change (35k on current oil)... and didn't know he had to change spark plugs or anything else. He attempted to change the plugs and broke the coil boots. I came and replaced the boots and asked about the air filter (he said it was fine). We go on a drive and it runs fine for 30 minutes... then on our way back starts to try and stall at idle... and I notice it's billowing grey-white smoke... it also randomly is losing power on acceleration (like bogging down and picking right back up). I checked and it wasn't overheating, there was no oil-water mix, nothing dripping from the tailpipe, no visible oil leaking anywhere (he admitted the car was going through a quart every week or two). So I start tearing things apart... the intake and throttle body were full of oil, the spark plugs had oil on the tips too, so I pulled the pcv valve and saw it was super clogged up. I checked around the valve cover and no leaks. I cleaned everything up, got a new air filter and pcv valve and put them in today. It won't start still. It started once and still rumbled and died. I don't know what my next move should be. Compression test and leak down test? Give up and burn it to the ground?

First of all, the car is and has been abused. 21,000 miles on an oil change?? If the car is burning a quart of oil a week, and since you found no leaks, I would assume that the piston rings are shot or the valve guides which would explain the oil on the spark plug tips, and the pcv valve being clogged. I am sure that a compression test will give you a better picture of the internal condition of the motor. From what you describe, I would venture a guess that the engine is shot due to lack of maintenance. The piston rings start to gradually wear to a point where they can no longer support compression and the engine craps out. Good luck!!!
