2012 versa long crank

Hey everyone, my sisters 2012 versa 1.8s with about 100k miles on it has been having an intermittent problem once or twice a month. It will crank and crank and try to fire several times, but takes a good bit to actually fire and stay running. It seems to me that it is a fuel issue, almost as if the pump and line lost its prime/bled back. The pump kicks on, seems to have good pressure (didn't put a gauge on it, don't really know where one would stick a gauge aside from right on the output of the pump.. But put a hose on the output and had what I believe is good pressure) beyond that I'm not sure where to look, do these have injector problems? Is there something I missed electrically? There are no codes, or any other indicators of a problem except this intermittent issue. Any ideas?

Welcome aboard.

Is car regularity serviced?

Somewhere along the fuel rail is a schrader or some valve to hook up to if not off the fuel rail.

Do you smell gas when its hard to start? Do you smell gas the night before? Could be leaking injector leaking psi down the night before so it needs to build up to start. Do you have radio code and try to disconnect and reconnect battery? Have you checked spark plugs as they have a 100k mile life span. What about using a fuel injector cleaner?

Is it really cold when it wont fire? Could be battery going bad spinning starter slower than needed to fire right up.

I've owned 2, a 2009 S and 2011 SL 1.8L. I can think of 2 possible situations I've had that sound similar. Sometimes, I've even been able to reproduce situation #1 on demand.

1) Car sits long enough to cool down completely. Get in, start it, put it into gear quickly, move it in the driveway, shut it off. Sometimes, it would struggle to restart right away, or it would the next time I got into the car after it cooled down.

I have never had this problem if I let the car run no less than 90 seconds before putting it into gear, and during cold ambient, this car needs more time than that (when the cold engine light shuts off).

2) One other non-electrical situation I ran into on my 2009 was when my fuel pump died around 123,000 miles. That throws a code, so it wasn't that. When I replaced it with a scrap fuel pump w/housing, the Fuel Pressure Regulator caused the car to frequently take 10 seconds of cranking and variable fuel pedal manipulation to fire up. I simply swapped my old one with the scrap one and the problem stopped.

So, I'd think about #1 . Make sure you let it warm up a little. See if it happens again. If it does, #2 could be a possibility. The FPR's located inside the fuel tank on the fuel pump assembly, but it's not the hardest DIY repair by any means.

When I was testing e15 and e85 it turned cold briefy and a few cooler mornings I had that inthe tank it cranked for like ten seconds before firing up. It was my fault that happen and further research it seems it takes flex fuel vehicles longer to start when using higher ethanol flavored fuels.
