Vent direction knob not working

I have a 2009 Versa SL. The knob which allows you to select the direction of heat/ac does nothing when i turn it. It is always blowing through the front vents. I did some digging on the forums and found someone who had somewhat of a similar issue, and started to open up the passenger side area and looking for where the trouble might be. I found that turning the knob in effect moves a long peice of metal that looks like a round hook. Apparently this is supposed to be connected to something, but in my case it's not connected to anything. Can someone help a newbie that is trying to save some money after buying a used car fix this?

What do i need to connect this metal peice to? I looked at the MTC section of the service manual and can't figure it out. ANY HELP is hugely appreciated!!
