'What is this thing?' and DRL question

Hi, My new 2011 Versa SL Hatchback continues to mystify me. I need help.

1) Just to the right of my hood and fuel door levers, is an unidentified 'thing.' It's about 1-inch in width, about 1/2 inch in height. The plastic front has a series of 13 little square indentations. There's an electric wire at the back end. On the bottom side, there appears to be a 'pressable' button. Not knowing its function, I chose not to press it. It's to the left of the OBDII connector. This little gadget doesn't appear in the Owner's Manual. On page 0.7, it's located to the right of item # 24. My neighbor has a 2011 Versa sedan without the host of options found on the LS Hatch. Her can doesn't have this 'device.' Can someone tell me what it is and what it does? I'm guessing - a sensor of some sort?

2) Daytime Running Lights [DRL], The Owner's Manual describes this feature as being on 'Canadian vehicles.' My neighbors 2011 Versa HAS DRL! The schematics in the Nissan FSM (CD) shows DRL relays and such only on Canadian cars. My SL Hatch? I don't think it has DRL {I'm not in a position to run out and start the engine to find out for sure}. I don't recall having seen my headlights on during what little driving I've done. I'm pretty sure I would have noticed. So, do USA 2011 Versas had DRL - or just some?

james

Not sure about #1 but all Canadian vehicles have DRL (unless we purchased it across the border). I don't think any other American Versa owners have DRL.

well we do have a spot for a fuse in the engine bay fuse box, but im guessing there is no power to it, cause when u stick a fuse in it, nothing happens. Plus there's no metal prong on one side.

Like I said earlier. But if im correct the Rogue and Versa use the same headlight stalk. So one of my projects one day will be to see, if, IF, I can use the the stalk from a Rouge that has auto headlights, pop it into my car, and see if I cant wire some type of light sensor so it knows to turn on the headlights. But this may not work at all, but I would like to try.

I ran into a similar problem when trying to install cruise control. Nissan, being Japan owned, only puts the stuff in that the car needs. If your car, with some exceptions, does not have the option, such as cruise control or DRL, the support wiring IS NOT THERE. Saves couple of dollars per car in material for the company.

FYI: I have the Nissan shop manual if anyone wants the wiring diagram to attempt to make your own DRL. PM me.

any answers?

Hi James. Just wondering if you received any ideas on what the mysterious little box is? I've had a Versa S hatchback since last year, and just noticed the box tonight when I looked for the OBD2 port. Unlike you, I pressed the button immediately -- nothing happened (the car wasn't on), but maybe something interesting will happen when I start it up tomorrow. Thx! Mark.

Hi Mark, " . . . the mysterious little box?" Wow! That post was two years ago. No, I never did discover the purpose of the little box. Should you figure it out, please let me know. Thanks ~ james

As far as my Internet searching showed, YOU were the only person to EVER ask about it. If I don't forget, I'll see if the local dealer knows. Will keep you posted. Thx!
