Selected gear disappears off dash

I have a Nissan Versa Note 2015 and I bought it about a year ago. My Check Engine light goes on and off (on a couple of days then off a couple of days, but no real pattern) frequently and taking it to Autozone, they say the fail code indicates the transmission range sensor. I have also noticed that after I first turn on the car, the gear selection indicator on the dash will show the normal "P", but after I press the brake to change gears, the letters will disappear and the box will just be black. When I come to a stop after driving, I'll feel a jolt as if the car wants to jump forward. I'm finding the TRS can't be bought just anywhere, and it's costly. So before going and buying one, I'd like to hear what you have to say. Keep in mind the symptoms only happen when the Check Engine light is on, but otherwise drives normally.

Probably the sensor but cannot say with no code. AZ often gives bum steers and what they say is most unreliable. Could be something as silly as a loose or corroded sensor connector or broken frayed wires at it.

GOTTA HAVE THAT EXACT CODE...............................so many of you do that, ask for diagnosis with no code.....................you do realize they can burn the crap out of you by your not looking at it yourself????????

I sold parts for years and well versed in how they do it. NEVER trust what they tell you. When I read codes I always pretty much insisted on the owners jotting it down and amazing how many will not look out for their own best interest and refuse to. Oh well, some like life harder than it has to be. The codes are easily researched and then tell you if you can trust the parts guy as well since the code definition will back up or shoot the guy.

Could be internal trans mechanical issues too. Depending on which trans it is, thinking of the CVT there. Trans can't function correctly in gear so the computer then sets a code for improper gear which sounds like that sensor. Again, why the code is needed. If the computer can't tell which gear it's in then of course it can't post what gear you are in on the dash. Your jolting likely from the same issue.

With my old honda with cvt the letter D would blink to indicate a problem and it also had a limi mode. The codes for it could not be pulled from a standard odb2 reader. You needed to read the flash codes using a paper clip or take it to the dealer and get them to use the HDS.

Need to get it fixed pretty quick as it can result in a torn up transmission. Errant signals there can have the trans go into two gears at once and instant junk.

If you have a cvt transmission, that little jolt you get when stopped can be the cvt going south. If your still under warranty, get it into the dealer as fast as you can, and have them diagnose it. My 2012 versa sedan did the same jolt when waiting at a stop sign or signal light. It was still under warranty, took it to the dealer, and within ten minutes they had it diagnosed as the main control valve in the transmission. The dealer was told by Nissan to replace the entire transmission under warranty instead of repairing the one in the car. Good luck!!

Funny how some posters run and join the forum when they are in a panic looking for help, then you never hear from them regarding the outcome of the problem. Its like a waste of time to try and help these individuals sometimes.
