Selected gear disappears off dash

I have a Nissan Versa Note 2015 and I bought it about a year ago. My Check Engine light goes on and off (on a couple of days then off a couple of days, but no real pattern) frequently and taking it to Autozone, they say the fail code indicates the transmission range sensor. I have also noticed that after I first turn on the car, the gear selection indicator on the dash will show the normal "P", but after I press the brake to change gears, the letters will disappear and the box will just be black. When I come to a stop after driving, I'll feel a jolt as if the car wants to jump forward. I'm finding the TRS can't be bought just anywhere, and it's costly. So before going and buying one, I'd like to hear what you have to say. Keep in mind the symptoms only happen when the Check Engine light is on, but otherwise drives normally.

Probably the sensor but cannot say with no code. AZ often gives bum steers and what they say is most unreliable. Could be something as silly as a loose or corroded sensor connector or broken frayed wires at it.

GOTTA HAVE THAT EXACT CODE...............................so many of you do that, ask for diagnosis with no code.....................you do realize they can burn the crap out of you by your not looking at it yourself????????

I sold parts for years and well versed in how they do it. NEVER trust what they tell you. When I read codes I always pretty much insisted on the owners jotting it down and amazing how many will not look out for their own best interest and refuse to. Oh well, some like life harder than it has to be. The codes are easily researched and then tell you if you can trust the parts guy as well since the code definition will back up or shoot the guy.

Could be internal trans mechanical issues too. Depending on which trans it is, thinking of the CVT there. Trans can't function correctly in gear so the computer then sets a code for improper gear which sounds like that sensor. Again, why the code is needed. If the computer can't tell which gear it's in then of course it can't post what gear you are in on the dash. Your jolting likely from the same issue.

With my old honda with cvt the letter D would blink to indicate a problem and it also had a limi mode. The codes for it could not be pulled from a standard odb2 reader. You needed to read the flash codes using a paper clip or take it to the dealer and get them to use the HDS.

If you have a cvt transmission, that little jolt you get when stopped can be the cvt going south. If your still under warranty, get it into the dealer as fast as you can, and have them diagnose it. My 2012 versa sedan did the same jolt when waiting at a stop sign or signal light. It was still under warranty, took it to the dealer, and within ten minutes they had it diagnosed as the main control valve in the transmission. The dealer was told by Nissan to replace the entire transmission under warranty instead of repairing the one in the car. Good luck!!

I have a 2016 Nissan Versa Sedan with 126,000+ miles. I had a very similar problem. It all started with my left turn signal light not flashing correctly with an intermittent connection where it would work then not work then eventually just stopped working. I would take it apart and reconnect it and it seemed to help but eventually the connection seem to become loose and the problem would start again. Long story short I took it to the nissan dealership after I started noticing the gear selection on my screen was starting to go blank when I selected drive and also a check engine light was turning on which when they used scanner it came up with the following code: P0705: Transmission Range sensor circuit(PRNDL input). The logical conclusion would be that the Park/Neutral Position Switch on transmission was either faulty or needed to be readjusted. This was not the conclusion the dealership came to. The conclusion was there was a short circuit in the tail lamps that was shorting out the ECM.Apparently the root cause was humidity getting inside taillight assembly. They replaced both the entire tail light assembly(parts 265553AN0A and 265503AN0A) for both sides and so far looks good except now the gear selection not showing up at all on the odometer display whereas before it did like 75% of the time.

Update: the problem is back after I turned on the vehicle the following day so seems it may be the Park/Neutral switch, ECM or maybe my transmission. I'll find out tomorrow and try to update here.

Beware, some transmissions now have the range sensor built into the trans, you must change the trans to get a new one. More combining of a common cheap part into something much bigger to force huge parts sales to get more money. TCM issues often mess with the gear indicator too.

If the problem above was fixed the gear position indicator would be back to working. More incompetent dealer work to get expensive parts changed that did nothing. Typical.

Post #7 ...........why the owners often need fixing more than the cars, they simply expect you to give them the one part that fixes everything, not doing so they dump you quick as you cannot be abused to their needs. Why so many lie about having searched 'everywhere' when they didn't; they actually are demanding you pay attention to them and them only in one -on-one personal service for free. Why when the attitude shows I tend to screw with them so much, I have no issues with honest questioning at all but the silly people that get lit up way too quick while basking in their stupidity?.......I eat them for lunch.

When they disappear it shows they did not care to give back at all even if the answers fixed them to go on. You know the type, part of the 40% that has things so screwed up now.
