Installing Rear Backup Camera - Need help

Hi - I have a 2009 Versa Hatchback.

I have a Bluetooth wireless backup camera that I want to connect to my new touchscreen radio.

The camera part should be easy (I hope) - I believe that I can just splice it into one of my rear backup lights for power.

The part I am having a problem with is on the radio itself. There is a "Reverse" connection to the radio that tells the radio to force-override the current video screen with the backup camera video. I expect that this is supposed to also be connected to the signal to the rear backup lights, but I don't know where to access that signal easily from the front part of the car. I am hoping that it is being run close by the center console harnesses somewhere (that would be handy).

I don't want to get the signal from the back of the car - That defeats why I purchased the "wireless" camera option, and I am trying to avoid pulling the whole car paneling apart to route this single wire that is already in the front of the car.

Does anybody know where I can get to the "Reverse" / rear backup signal in a harness in the front of the car?

Thanks!

AzJazz

I have heard those wireless backup camera are very unreliable, are you that cheap not to spend the additional $150 to have it professional done. I dont know what you paid for the system, but for $50-70 you could gave gotten a decent backup camera and most car stereo installers would give you a discount if you bought the camera from them, so maybe for $200 you could have a reliable fully warranted system

Hi, Daniel - Well, I can't say that I was cheap, but I couldn't justify spending about $200 for a backup camera and installation. We do watch our expenses pretty closely. I just wouldn't have installed a camera at all if the camera cost as much the radio that it will be interfacing with. It is more of a nice-to-have than a got-to-have. If the camera doesn't work out in the end due to a reliability issue, I'll be OK with what I spent so far. The camera did get really good ratings on Amazon. Also, I did install the radio myself, including routing and mounting a multiport USB jack. I don't mind getting my hands dirty, as long as it's within my capabilities.

BTW ... I did find the Reverse wire, and connected it to the radio. I tried posting pictures of my "Reverse" signal wire identification yesterday in this thread, but it must have been rejected by the forum mods (maybe because I'm new here).

For anybody that is interested: The Backup Light power wire is behind the driver-side kick panel (to the left of the pedals). In the 2009 Versa, it is on Connector M15 - Pin 2 (Pin 2 is pink with silver stripes). Connector M15 is the 16 pin connector, and the other connector in that area (M16) is a 24 pin connector.

However ... The part that I thought would be easiest - connecting the rear camera itself - may be the hardest part to accomplish. I know where to connect the camera for power, but I haven't figured out how to get the camera power wires routed to the inside of the vehicle so that I can connect them to the rear backup light.

Does anybody know how to get the power wires inside?

Thanks,

AzJazz

You'll probably have to drill a hole thru the metal frame just be careful not to hit anything important or check out the many youtube videos out there to get some idea how to run the wire back inside the car. Good luck on your back up camera project

Thanks. Yeah my android auto radio by sony is like that. So even if you get a wireless camera for the rear the headunit requires a lead and signal on top of a signal from the camera so it knows to switch.

Maybe the wireless smartphone camera is a better idea?

If you watch the video below you will see that his instillation uses a wireless transmitter and receiver to send the signal from the backup light to the radio:
Those "wireless" kits crack me up.

All that's really wireless is the fact you don't need to run a signal wire from the camera to the receiver, which is IMO, the easiest part. You still have to run power wires to both with splicing (of your choice) required, plus drilling in most cases with proper wire 'hiding'.

There's areas that won't allow devices stuck to the w/s in line of sight anymore either.

I certainly don't have unlimited funds, but if I knew of a shop that would install a quality backup camera with a professional install.. With warranty for $200? I'd do it. Probably have my truck done too!
