Transmission shifts late until warm

I have a 2012 Nissan Versa 1.8s with the 4 spd auto transmission (not cvt). 106,xxx miles. The issue I’m having is when I’m accelerating the rpms will go all the way up to around 5 or 6 then drop down to 3 or 4 and then shifts into the next gear. It only happens until the cars warmed up. Once it is warmed up though it shifts perfectly fine. im not sure if this is something normal or what it may be. I thought I might just need to drain and refill the transmission fluid but I’m a little nervous from all the different opinions on changing out transmission fluid.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

If you don't feel confident changing out the fluid, take it into the dealer and have them do it. I would be more concerned about doing damage to the trany by not changing it. Start with the simple things first, and if that doesn't solve the problem, then move up to the next option.

The manufacturer's maintenance schedule for many automatic transmissions doesn't call for fresh fluid until 100,000 miles or, with some Ford transmissions, even 150,000 miles. A lot of mechanics say that is too long and that it should be done at least every 50,000 miles.May 3, 2017

I’m having the same problem. I did a drain and fill (it’s relativity easy) and it still does the same thing. When I shift it into drive it’s much smoother but that’s all. I have 83k miles 4 sod auto and with an aftermarket intake. I DID NOT drop the pan and change the filter tho. I’ve been reading a lot about this problem and I haven’t found a solution.

Guessing the 4 speed isnt much better than the cvt? I guess your best solution is to learn to drive a stick.

Plus you less likely to be carjacked. At the parking lot of my place of work (inner city) a couple "misguided" youths tried to jack a lady's vehicle - until they realized it has a manual stick. Not 100% proof, but still...

Is it crazy that it may just be the way the car handles warming up? My olddd 1996 Montero did the same thing. It would rev pretty high when cold, but once warmed up it would shift perfectly. I think it's just the cars way of saying I'm still warming up lol. Good luck with the issue though!

My tacoma did both. It was slow to shift when cold and many times did not go into over drive. I changed the fluid and nothing changed.

On older vehicles you have a rod or cable that tells the tranny the throttle position so it shifts early or late. I normally push the rod all the way to one extreme so it shifts early.
