Hi, so I have not had a great experience with my Versa and this is the newest of issues...the area near the rear tail light on the INTERIOR has melted. I have searched high and low online for an issue like this on ANY car and came up dry. I am stumped and concerned. Did this happen while I was operating the vehicle and I didnt know it? Seems unlikely. So, did it happen while just sitting there? That may be even more concerning. Could thos be an electrical issue? A while back, about a year ago, I discovered a large, maybe a burn or melt of some type. I have also never been able to figure out why or how that happened. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I just dont want to be suprised by an electrical fire or explosion one day.

First two photos are the new burn/melt that I just discovered. The other three are the one I discovered a year ago.

Same here, the pics other than the last one clearly show extremely localized melting due to maybe even somebody heating a pocket knife up and then sticking it into the plastic. That is NOT a wiring or other normal heating issue at all to me. The last pic is questionable as to cause but likely more of the above.

Kids back there?, I'd be looking at that first. Something external to the car is doing that. You can clearly see where whatever the object is pushes into the material and pulls back out, the melted material at edge of hole sides shows the direction it went and ended in, and in other places the melted fuzz not to go all the way through clearly shows the heat source whatever it was as starting from ABOVE the material to begin with. NOT underneath.

Possibly, the water bottle could microfocus the sun if bottle was shaped just right.

I had an old MII Ford that a couple of times the papers I stored in the glove compartment tried to catch on fire there for a while, when you opened the door the papers were black and ash that turned to dust when handling them. It threw me for a loop for a bit until I realized the car sat in one tight parking configuration a lot and I had in the past removed an upper box liner to let sunlight into the glove box at a certain time of day when the sun and the hole lined up. The windshield was hard curved right there and it must have magnified the sun to do it through the hole. I covered hole up and the issue went away.

I understand that the burns on the seat back appear to be from something heating up and imprinting. It could have potentially happened when I was moving,
But I never discovered what specifically would have caused it.

The melt that is happening around the taillight area is just something that I can not explainn nor understand. No kids in the car, no weird large, hot objects in the hatch that would have heated to whatever ungodly temp it would require to do that. It was just there one day. That particular issue is my main concern.

Nissan has called me back and essentially said I'm on my own to figure this out. Warranty is expired and they have no recalls or other technical red flags that makes them think they have any responsibility to look into it any further. I will take it in and pay for a diagnostic to make sure I am not in danger of it catching on fire. Mechanically the car is still in good shape and only 70,000 miles on a 10 year old vehicle so as long as it is safe, I will keep going with it for a while more.

Like you say, it's most likely a manufacturing defect, but it's hard to say on a 10yr/old vehicle. Body lotions, oils, perfumes, sprays, environmental conditions, etc.. can effect interior materials on some cars, where it wont on others. I've seen vehicle air fresheners melt the materials they are resting up against.

Just offering some suggestions here.

Went back and looked at pics again, the first two appear to have same cause as the others, if you look close you can see where the hot object went into the material and came back out to pull out some melted. You can clearly see the melting globules on the edges of the 'cuts' as the object pulled out. I melt plastic all the time to cut it, that is identical damage. The damage is too sharply defined to be general slow melting.
