Trunk Opens by Itself - 2014 SV

My mom bought a 2014 Nissan Versa SV about six weeks ago. She says that about two weeks or so after she bought it, her co-worker came into the office and noticed her trunk was open. My mom said it was shut when she went to work and it's only a 3-5 min. drive. Today, she was going to go shopping, but noticed her trunk was open again, so she decided not to go anywhere. She's very disturbed by this.

The trunk was definitely shut when my mom came home yesterday, I saw it was shut. She couldn't have possibly opened it from accidentally hitting the button on the remote. It's nearly impossible. We tested out the key and you do have to be standing fairly close to the car. There are only two keys to the car. My mom has one key and I have the other.

How and why would the trunk open all by itself? And when I say open, I mean that the trunk lid was open several inches like when you push the button on the key remote and it pops open. It's a bit disturbing, someone could steal groceries out of it if it spontaneously opened while at a store. Or what if it opened while driving? Has anyone else had this happen? Should my mom call the dealer to notify them?

Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

i would seriously consider telling your mom to try taking the keys out of her pocket or wherever they might have a chance to have the trunk release button pressed, while it may seem like the keys need to be close to the car in order for them to work that is not always the case as i have noticed depending on what angle im aiming my keys at my car they either will or will not lock/unlock my car from a far distance. not saying that she is accidentally pressing them, but just trying to get you on a process of elumination to see whats causing it as this is the first i've heard of the trunk opening by itself on a versa.

Thanks, that's good advice and something to keep in mind. However, I was there when my mom got home from work yesterday and I'm sure the trunk did not open before she went into the house. We actually just got through testing where she would need to stand outside for the trunk to open. There's no way she could have opened it yesterday. Maybe she did it the first time (at work), but not yesterday.

This is odd.

hmm, that is odd...the only other things i can suggest are to either unscrew the negative cable on the battery of the car and let it sit overnight and see if maybe it's an electrical glitch in the car or to try and replace the battery of the remote for the car and see if that solves anything. Other than that it sounds like a trip to the dealer might be in order if neither of those 2 things does anything, the only thing is they have to be able to reproduce the problem while it's at the dealer in order to figure out whats causing it and if it's an intermittent problem that may be a very hard thing to do and possibly costly for you.

Ok. Thanks. I'll tell her to keep her keys in her hand until she gets into the house or until she's far enough away that the remote can't possibly open it. If it happens again we'll know she didn't do it by accident. Then I'll have her or my dad call the dealer to let them know. Maybe others have had the same problem. I don't think she wants anyone messing with the battery unless it's the dealer. At least not until it's out of warranty.

I did a little research and found that this is not an uncommon problem. It appears the top complaints are coming from Nissan and Hyundai owners, though I didn't spend a lot of time checking that out.

Most people have claimed that once they bought a silicone rubber cover for their remote, that the problem went away. They swear by this product - The Jacketstore . com Home of the Keyless Remote Protective Cover

Unfortunately, they don't have one for a 2014 Versa SV sedan. Has anyone else tried these things? Maybe I can find some elsewhere. It's worth trying. Even if they don't work, it seems like they would add protection to the keys, plus it looks really cool.

I bought a brand new Nissan Sentra in 2013 and I and having the same issue.
It's not the car battery - trust me - what it IS - is the key fob's trunk release button is easily hit by accident when the key is in a person's pocket. I have had my neighbors ring my doorbell probably 50 times in the last year telling me "Did you know that your car trunk is OPEN?" Ughhhh!

I even tried putting my keys on a carabiner and keeping it clipped to the belt loop on my jeans in an effort to prevent that button from accidentally pushed in. Nadda. That didn't even solve the problem because sometimes when I sit down the keys strike the back of a chair or recliner causing the same issue.

I wish someone offered a hard plastic cover that would go over the entire black plastic unit of the key fob so that THAT particular button can't be depressed at all! I'd much rather just open my car trunk from the inside of the car from now on if I need to!

I am trying a 'modification' on my spare key fob in an effort to resolve this once and for all. Due to the cost of these replacement keys I REALLY didn't want to HAVE to resort to this....however, I keep all of my hunting clothing, gear, boots, etc. in my car trunk the entire 2.5 months of hunting season so that my hunting clothing doesn't get 'city' scent all over them, and one of the days, someone is going to find my trunk wide open and rip me off for hundreds of dollars worth of gear because of this issue.

So - upon opening up my spare key I have found what I think are 2 solutions to the problem. This evening (7/14/2014) I have tried the 1st less invasive method to see if this works and will report tomorrow if this does for others to consider. If NOT - than I will try solution #2 and report back again as well.

If my car trunk has a manual key lock hole/opening where I could just stick the key into the lock and open it the old fashioned way - then I wouldn't even bother with this darn thing! It is driving me crazy!

Honestly - this is probably my 5th Nissan and I love them - but this has been SO aggravating thus far I don't think I'd consider buying another Nissan again unless down the road they came up with some solution to this problem!

This is crazy!

So I have a 2008 Nissan Versa Sedan and today just as I was beginning to drive, my trunk popped open. I shut it, began to drive again--and it popped open. I've attempted to drive about 5 times and even put the car in reverse and you guessed it--popped open.

I read the threads above about fobs and trunk releases. I don't have those-2008 version. I have no remote trunk release button attached to my keychain, nor am I causing the trunk to open as the key is in the ignition. Hence, I looked up this forum for some answers.

I've had this car her entire life and this is the first it is happening to me. I tried locking all of the doors, hoping that might solve the problem. Let's see....nope! It did not. A little help?

With the trunk open, check the latch and make sure it is able to close fully. I used to have a similar problem when I had my '92 Accord, and the problem turned out to be the latch was only closing partially and not getting a good lock. To be honest I forget excactly how I fixed the problem, but I know it involved a flat-head screwdriver and manually resetting the latch mechanism.

Could be something freaky like the Fords do. I haven't studied these Nissan yet for the issue but if the wiring harness runs up into the trunk lid then depending on how the loom is run at the hinge point where it has to flex as the lid is raised, then the wires can slowly break and fracture to then either create an open circuit or short to other ones to make for all sorts of weird issues.

The Fords are really bad about that as they use bio-friendly wire insulation now and commonly it tends to biodegrade a little bit faster than planned to fall apart. Lots of trouble there and with harnesses underhood now. Not unusual to have to remove one and have it literally crumble to pieces in your hands.

I appear to be having this problem with my parents 2014 SV sedan. It may be related to another problem (P0705 code) or not. The most likely explanation is the wiring fault that amc49 mentions.

While diagnosing the P0705 code, the trunk opened on its own. I just assumed it was because the button got pressed in my pocket. It just happened again now, with the keys on my table (they're at the extreme rear of the house and the car is in the driveway at the front).

The interesting part is that the P0705 can be caused by corrosion in the tail lamp assemblies. I think the combination of these two problems may be pointing to a harness problem in the rear of the car, the flexing of the loom as the trunk opens and closes may have caused a short circuit or faulty connection.
