First, your car is probably not sophisticate enough to be hacked. A Tesla has an autopilot capable of independently operating the vehicle (even if its only allowed to when supervised) and a cellular network connection. Many Nissan Versas don't even have power windows. (I can just see the hacker, totally confused , sitting there next to you at a stop light. "HIS WINDOWS SHOULD BE RANDOMLY GOING UP AND DOWN AND HIS DOORS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING. WTF!? ALL IT DOES IS THROW AN ERROR CODE. THIS *SHOULD* BE WORKING!!!")
But seriously, I doubt its possible to hack low end cars like a versa without at the very least plugging something in. Even the, there's not a lot you can do. Maybe you could screw with the throttle and brakes. But a Tesla could theoretically, if it were programmed to, (or reprpgrammed) just start up, back out of your driveway and drive 200 miles before running out of power, without you even being in it.
Tesla Owner: "Tesla, stop the vehicle and open the drivers side door! "
Tesla: "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that! Why don't you take a sleeping pill and recline the drivers seat."
Tesla Owner "call 911"
Tesla "The cellular antenna is still malfunctioning"
But seriously, what exactly are you concerned about? Is your crazy ex-gf a super hacker? Such a hack would need to be targeted at you, and your car. Maybe your super hacker ex could hack your car and make the brakes go out. But tere are far easier ways to get to you. How about a 50 cent single edged razor blade. She can just cut part way through the front and rear brake lines. You hit the brakes in a panic situation and one circuit will fail, so , feeling reduced breaking effectiveness, you push the pedal HARDER, and the other hydraulic circuit blows out as well. Or maybe she could put a block of c4 crusted in #10
3/4" wood screws under your seat. Did you check before you started the car? Or before you even sat down? Probably not. While most people would agree, such things are by no means impossible, and even happen from time to time, the possibility is remote.
In fact, let's talk about the more likely ways your going to die. Maybe your super hacker ex texts you that she wants to get back together so you text her back. Maybe you tell text her to meet you at Starbucks, or maybe you tell her some other less pleasant place to go, but it doesn't matter because you ran aired light and were killed instantly by a semi truck. But maybe your smart enough to do that. But there are other ways you could die that you probably dont worry about. When was the last time you had your brake fluid changed? That's right, it should be changed every 20,000 miles or it picks up moisture and rusts out the system. You look up from texting your ex, see the light red, hit the breaks and that's when the steel brake line, with no help from her, goes pop. It usually doesn't happen, but it can, and yet you people are more worried about their car being hacked than following the manufacturers recommendations for preventative maintenance. For that matter, how was that plain steamed broccoli you had for lunch, it would have been better with salt and butter and some cheese. A big fat greasy cheeseburger and fries would have been better still, but you just had plain steamed broccoli, because your just that concerned about living to 115.
