2017 hit and run. parked my car on the street last night, woke up to this nice gift... hit and run. half the bumper fell off.. body shop wants $1000 bucks to put new bumper on and paint... dealership says its one molded piece so need new bumper. i examined and if you guys can see via the pics, the bumper has very minor scuff that can be buffed out, no dents on it as it's plastic no problems with the side of car or lights... how can i mcguvyer this fix? tie wrap? bolts? looks like just the plastic tip at the end broke as the bolt is still fastened to where it belongs... glue? buy quick release kit on amazon and secure that way? need some advice...

There are several attachment points there overall. The white plastic supports/mounts likely were plastic melt-welded to the outer cover and no way will you be gluing that up to stay as it is oily based plastic that no epoxy holds onto forever. You gotta figure out positive bolt-ons that are hidden there. I did one very close to that (but worse) about 5 years ago and it could not be seen to have been hit when done. Depends on what the back of cover surface is made like to fasten the white supports back on. Mine I pop-riveted part of it and sheetmetal screws into metal clips for the rest, $1500 estimate, my cost maybe $10. Your skills there are more important than the parts used. Need to carefully remove the white supports and figure out how to get them back on the cover permanently. The entire cover has to come off to establish how the rest of it attaches too like the center. Need to remove it anyway to avoid more damage, leaving it on half attached when your glue idea fails (take my word for it, I sold every type of glue and epoxy known to mankind, and I've seen all the fails!) is screaming to lose it entirely. The black plastic trim at top is going to be an issue if cracked up like it appears to be, depending on how the back is shaped fixable or no. Need a can of touchup spray to cover the primer.

Go to nicoclub.com and register for free, the OEM service manuals are there for free to download and invaluable in showing you how the body pieces come off and re-attach.

That one likely very easy but of course I can't be there to do it for you.

There's ALWAYS a penalty paid for accidents, it's just that it is built into the average rates and increases now, you don't see it and why they now say no you don't. More gimmick. Look at what you pay compared to 20 years ago. The intercompany assumption is that you WILL have an accident on averages now rather than not having any at all. You now pay for it even if you don't have one, they rate you as more of a risk every year you are with them. I predicted that policy change many years ago. Like the way you pay more for a newer car 'because it's new' and more for an older one 'because it's older', the excuses for higher rates are simply stupid now and fit perfectly in a Trump universe.

Why the rates at first are so different from 5 years out now. If you stay with a company for 5 years I can tell you you are paying WAAAAY too much. I switch almost every year now. If not you get rates jacked up bigtime once they get past that first year. How they can show you again the $500 savings when you switch companies, the assumption is based on 5 years. I force more than that by switching every year. Had to jump up to 6 months last year when they wanted to increase $125 after only 6 months with still a perfect record. Nope, not this boy......................I play those suckers against each other all day long. Why they switched to 6 month periods too, to jack up rates faster but in SMALLER amounts to make you overlook that fact. Sucker...................they SEE that in your insurance history and by switching often they give you lower rates trying to get you to stay longer. Try it and see what your starting rates go to. Mine dropped like a rock. My last renewal went up $2.

Like the older car /newer car thing...............you pay more being a bad driver and more being a good driver, your driving record doesn't mean spit any longer other than as an excuse generator. Anybody looking at accident forgiveness and thinking it's something they gave into, that is simply WRONG. More like built in to cover the huge rates now and simultaneously shut you up too.

I had 2 non fault accidents. One a trailer hit me that came loose from a truck and another a van plowed into my passenger rear once grid locked traffic started moving and lady said she didnt see me sitting in front of her.

THe first one the guys insurance crapped out on me and I ended up getting my insurance involved. Long story short the body shop was going to charge me with trespassing for visiting my car and sell it at auction for what they had in it since the guys insurance wouldnt pay. My insurance rep came up with a blank check and got my car and got it towed to another shop. After that my 6 month rate went up 300 bucks.

When the lady hit me, her insurance paid for everything after ignoring me for 2 weeks. Nothing happened with my insurance, however when I applied for a driving job it showed up on my license and impacted my application as the employer did not care who was at or not at fault. :surprise

Dont forget diminish value as if this is reported it will show up on carfax for life of the car and reduce its resale value.

There you go, the two edged sword of plastic parts. We b-tch all day long about them and often well-placed but under the right conditions in a accident they are your best friend in how sometimes they take stress, that a metal part would be totally deformed with to be ruined, to little damage and you still can fix them for super easy and cheap.

It's saved me thousands personally when I was willing to drive a car that ended up with a slight blemish here or there as compared to insurance fix to get that last 1% perfect. Here in Texas it has proven out to not pay to go to the very last perfect detail, they smash into your car again as soon as you fix it. I live at a tee intersection and the number of morons who come down it then attempt to back up to turn around to get back on the major road is uncountable, even though all you have to do is come fully out to the corner point to see that all you have to do is turn left and back down to do the same with no backup stressing at all. Having a car parked in front of house has now cost me 7 crunches (over 35 years) where -ssholes do not say a word, only drive off after backing into one of my cars.

There's a solid reason why this town is 70% under the poverty level by census counts, they mostly are stupid and never got all the way through high school..............
