Plastic-y Rattle from Front

Hi, everyone

Hopefully this is in the right place, I'm new here.

I drive a 2015 Versa SV w/ 46k miles. About 2 months ago, I ran over a small log on freeway after it fell out of someone's truck. The car cleared it and suffered no visible damage except deflated tires, but I'm afraid it might have messed something up near the left front portion of my car in the suspension or wheel assembly.

I had my tires changed/balanced, etc. and shortly after experienced this subtle plastic rattling noise (for sure not dash rattle) and loud creaking when going over speed bumps. Had my suspension & undercarriage checked out twice and they said nothing was wrong.

My next thought was a bad wheel bearing, but I don't have any grinding noises, wheel wobble, or uneven rotor wear, so I'm not so sure. Any ideas?

Don't know about the creaking sound, but the rattling might be the heat shield over the muffler. Nissan mounted it with bolts that were too small, the metal fatigues at the mounting points, and the heat shield starts to rattle. Thats and easy fix. Good luck!!!

Does the sound vary with speed being loudest at 45 mph? Thats typically a bearing. Does the sound vary with speed?

Did you get the alignment checked? Hitting a pot hole can screw up your alignment and you hit a log that deflated your tire?

Creeking is from plastic, rubber. Fluttering is from plastic like a fender liner, heat shield, etc.

Most wheel shops will do an under body inspection for free. May want to consider that with a 4 wheel alignment and ask if they can check for noise and suggest a loose heat shield or fender liner.

What constitutes the heat shield fix? Retightening the bolts? Putting on new bolts? Replacing the heat shield? My heat shield fix also started to rattle several months ago. I tightened the bolts; the noise went away for a few days (weeks?) but came back. I haven't bothered to retighten the bolts since then (taking care of a baby and just being lazy).

What I did was use the same bolts, with larger steel washers. I used two steel washers on every bolt. The first washer was about 1 inch across, and the second washer was a smaller one that would not allow the head of the bolt to pass through the larger washers hole. If you can find a large washer with a hole smaller than the bolt head, you can just use one. In my case, the larger one had a hole that the head of the bolt could pass through so that was the reason for using the second smaller washer. The lager washer covers a lot more of the mufflers mounting tab metal and hopefully it will not cause the same problems that Nissans method caused.
