Great write up. your work could have been less messy if only you had removed the plastic shield. It involves removing 4 or 5 10mm screws and 2 plastic clips that hold the rear part of the plastic shield. Once you removed the shiled you have better access to the oil filter. I like to take an old rag and clean the lip that is just under the oil filter to avoid gunk build up around the oil filter.

cut a notch or a flap. The shield really isn't in my way at all. I guess it would be a little easier if it wasn't there. Maybe I have small arms and hands?

I use 100% Synthetic 0 W 30 from AMSOIL along with their filter. It is recommended for extended drainsl.

We've use the same filters on GL1800. GoldWings. I sure wish Walmart still sold the SuperTechs. They were very good filters and very inexpensive. Many of the GoldWing guys use the Purolator now.

Don't elevate without jack stands for safety!

Crush washer in good shape.

Filter located on front side of engine block.
Previous 6607 filter here, plenty of room for longer 7317:

Bought filter wrench today. Bent plastic out of way to use wrench.
Took a little wiggling to tighten the wrench and loosen the filter.

Some drippage after filter removal. Be prepared!
Can see threads well enough to install new one.

Comparing 7317 [left] to 6607 filter

Some room to hand-tighten, but not much!

Wrenching on new filter: do NOT overtighten!
I wouldn't bother with wrench if I had Fram with grippy end.

Ahhhh, golden goodness...
Is the drain plug back in?

Got every drop, about 3.5L

Drain and dispose, DIY depot

Circulating new oil, cleaning injectors, scrubbing valve seats...
Don't try this at home
And there ya go!
Thanks for the details

I read on a thread here on the forum on how to remove the oil filter from the top without removing the cowling from under the 1.8 MR engine.

It works just fine...

Unclip the radiator overflow canister. You do not have to take the hose off.
Reach down, with a socket wrench and oil filter socket.

Just make sure you have a larger pan under the car to catch the oil dripping down from the block and cowling.

Reinstall hand tighten the oil filter and wipe up any oil on the cowling and oil pan with a rag.

I just don't like to remove the under carriage cowling to change the oil filter.

Go-pedal right to the mat. Electronically limited not to cross redline.
Ironically, I'm on an mpg kick this week, so no redlines today
I did have to add half litre of oil this morning, 4000km after last change, 6000km till next, now at 194000km
