Question Moving Gear Shifter?

Random thought has come to mind and I hope you can help me think this through. I have an '09 HB, and the location of the cup holders and gear shifter has annoyed me since day one. I think they should be reversed.

My favorite oversized "sippee cup" doesn't fit without leaning in the cup holders due to the angle of the air controls above and the gear shift restricts access from the other direction. I noticed all sorts of splash stains above from times drinks didn't exactly get into the cup holders gracefully.

Is it possible for me to make the swap with a custom center console to cover things?

My current setup is just like this one:

I'd like to rearrange it like this Sentra:

Heck, if I could move things to fit the console of a Juke or Sentra, why not? Is there a mechanical reason why I shouldn't? Will it cause more issues with the vehicle's operation? Or is it just something people haven't wanted to bother with before?

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it!

Man, that is a really good question. I can't find anything at all about this on good ol' trusty Google. Now that you mention it, I would really like to do the same thing depending on IF it can be done and how hard of a project it would be. Fingers crossed that this idea goes somewhere and nobody kills it by saying it's impossible.

Thanks! I'm also sure there will be the Debbie Downers who will have their say, but I am optimistic that it realistically can be done. I've looked at a few schematics so far, and it seems like what you need to tie into for that can be moved. I think it would be a matter of looking into it with the center console off and from both sides. These little babies are tight and I worry that there might not be enough space where you want to relocate the shifter.

And for the record, no, I'm not going to drink out of smaller cups. That's not a solution for me. The interior design team for the Versas must have spent too much time at work, IMO. They haven't been outside for a while and forgot that beverages come in other packages than the cans they get from the vending machines, lol!

ps-I did a little research on the sizes comparing the Sentra to the Versa in 2009. The Sentra is 4" or so wider. So, the parking brake could not have cup holders beside it. They'd have to be in front of it, angled (like we have currently in the Versas), between the brake and shifter column. Heck, the way it is now, I can't squeeze a drink next to the parking brake if I wanted to. It's really narrow!

I have a large drink container that I bring to work with me every day, and it won't fit in the cup holders either because it is too tall. I have to shove it between the e-brake and the passenger seat to carry it around.
