Hi,
I would like to ask you and get some help regarding upholstery. Mine is 2009 Nissan versa Hatchback. If you see the attached images, it will help you understand better. Suddenly possibly starting last year, the upholstery, leathers from door side has been pulling out naturally. Now they are getting worse. One door side first started but now all other three doors' leathers are loosen and pulling out. I took it to Nissan dealership, but they had no ideas why they are happening and they even said that they have never seen this case before. The customer service center created the case and Regional Consumer Affairs Specialist contacted me saying:
They can not provide any payment because the warranty is over and mileage.

I understand the warranty policy and nowhere in the warranty indicated my issues. Also the upholstery issues are not even related to mileage, warranty. No matter how old is the car, it shouldn't happen. The Regional Consumer Affairs Specialist couldn't provide any other explanation (except warranty and mileage) to make me understand.
Now obviously, when Nissan Dealerships need to address new customers this possible issues after 8 or 9 years they purchased.
I have been telling them it is manufacture false, so they need to pay to fix, but they keep saying about warranty and mileage.

Can anybody advise me, please? Please see the images of the issues. Is it common? Obviously not.

Nissan is legally bound by their warranty, and that's it. The car is nine years old, and the warranty has expired. Regardless if you have a rare event happening, they are under no obligation to correct it at this point in time. My wifes 2009 versa sedan has the gel coat peeling off the paint on almost every section of the car, and there is nothing i can do about it.

'Also the upholstery issues are not even related to mileage, warranty. No matter how old is the car, it shouldn't happen.'

Another one that thinks he/she paid for a car that lasts a thousand years..............that is absolutely unreasonable, the warranty covers the car of which the upholstery is only a part of. They do not and are not required to spell out every little thing that can go wrong with one, the user is expected to understand that.

Sorry. Thought I was helping.

I'm in so much pain and exhaustion, guess I've reached the point that I can't deal with others shit anymore.

There is helpful teaching and then there's the insecure need to one up, correct, show how much smarter you are than everyone else. I'm 46, high school was many years ago and I have no desire to live that mentality again.

Vinyl is typically plastic welded to other trim rather than glued. Why? Because it is an oily base plastic that virtually no glue on the planet will hold onto. 3M for instance made a specialty vinyl glue because so many sources wanted to find a way to glue it and maybe $80 a tube for it. And, it doesn't even work some of the time too. Stretching the vinyl makes the issue even worse. Epoxy will seem to hold until it mysteriously comes loose and the problem. The vinyl has enough oil in VOC form exude out that the glue will not stick.

To fasten it you need to staple or screw it down at out of sight points. THEN, glue as a backup to add stick will help but not by itself.

There are a very few glues of super high VOC content that will maybe work by actually melting the vinyl but they are commonly not available to the average DIYer as they are pretty toxic and absorb into skin really easy.

I am having the same issue and also have a 2009 Versa Hatchback (SL). I have already had the entire upholstery replaced while it was under warranty, including the driver side door because if the poor quality of the fabric. I am one person in this car, no kids and very few passengers and the upholstery looked like i had had the car for 10 years by year 2! Very frustrating!

That's terrible even for a 10yr/old vehicle. Apparently it's poor manufacturing. I'm thinking most Versii have the more basic trim levels without this style door trim.

In terms of a fix? There's no way to patch that up as is. Like said, aside from reupholstering yourself, you could swap out door panels with a more basic model with the hard plastic interior door panels.

I guess that's one good thing about having the hard plastic one piece door panels on the S models. It's as fancy as an egg carton, but has little to go wrong with it.

Interesting that they are both 09's and hatchbacks. Guess they had a problem with the interior materials that year. That said....they really aren't going to do anything about it.

Options:

Junk yard for door panels
Fabric from fabric store (less than $5.00). It really isn't hard to replace.
Leave it alone and look 'trendy'
Go to a local shop that replaces car interiors and have it fixed.

Smile: It doesn't affect the way your car runs in the slightest.

Not just 2009s. One of my 2011s developed this problem as well. I fixed it by stretching the vinyl the best I could and glued it with Gorilla Glue. Did this several years ago and the glue is still keeping it intact. Only problem I had was using the original version of Gorilla Glue which dries white. Shoulda used the clear version as there's a little bit of the dried white glue showing since the glue expands when it dries.

The finishings including upholstery on this vehicle are, in my opinion, sub par. I am pretty gentle with my car and pieces are just falling off and breaking and melting left and right. I have already repaired the door several times on my own, but I will have to do reupholstery if I want it to stay because the fabric was, from what I can tell, cut too small and that is why it continuously pops out of place.

(Re: post #10 )

Nope, It is VINYL which heatshrinks in use from exposure to the sun. Cheaper crap low level cars have been doing it forever, I have chased the issue on more than one Ford car in 40 years and you will see hundreds of all brands doing the same if you tour a scrapyard where the cars sit out in the sun all day.

I have '11 model and within the last year the clearcoat on the paint has begun to peel literally everywhere now, it is helped along by the acid rain we have here. I can say for positive fact that at least on exterior paint Ford does a whoppingly better job of paint quality, it lasts some 50% longer than any Nissan paint I've seen. I have an '00 and '02 Focus both of which have better paint than the '11 Versa does now.

It is what it is. People thinking cars last forever need to park them in garages to sit and if not temperature controlled you will even have trouble there.

Plastic parts breaking is another one. All cars are going to it to lighten them for mileage and I am firmly convinced they are making them to break after a certain lifetime now, you can look at the parts new out of box and predict where they will break now and surprise, later they do just that. The engineers are being turned inward now, the modern ECM made the cars able to go 300K miles plus and that stops new car sales like you never saw. They are now creating 'nuisance' issues that stack up one by one to wear the owner out to then after a few years yearn for that new car even though the other one has plenty of miles left on it, it just has broken this or that. The plastic parts and the shrinking material here and paint quality are all part of that using the engineers to work to use psychological thinking to push cars faster to the graveyards to sell more new ones.

Post #5 seems to be a victim of his own short circuited analysis.

Other than that, molly-coddling people to not want to challenge the thinking if incorrect produces most of the trouble in this country now. The colleges don't even do it now and why so many idiots are coming out of college now. With $100K bills. The mix of safespace and wrong thinking is deadly, getting somebody out of that is usually of a violent nature. Or leave them alone to let the brick walls take care of the foreheads. That way we are nice. Please don't slip in all that blood.

'I have the right to not have my world shaken up at all' is fast becoming a mark of personal insanity.

Guess I got REALLY lucky. Picked up a pristine interior out of a 09 SL sedan. The seats are more comfy than what I got now.

The only drawback is the rear seatback came out of a 09 hatch. That seat is disgusting! Heavy smoker, lots of spills and who knows what else.
Makes one wonder if between smoking, spills, and lack of care, they end up like that.

BTW, the current interior on my Versa is still in very good shape.

Oh well, off to the carwash to brute force clean that janky seatback. My poor little steam cleaner just can't get all the crud out.
