The Nissan Altima might be one of the last cars you ever think of when it comes to race cars, but this one is easily the coolest Altima yet.
The 2016 Australian motorsport season is on the horizon and Nissan has unveiled two of its race cars. The one we’re paying more attention to is the 2016 Nissan Altima V8 Supercar entry, featuring a livery that resembles what you see on Nissan’s global GT3 race cars. The Altima race car will be piloted once again by Michael Caruso and boasts more than 600 horsepower.
The Japanese automaker will also campaign a GT-R NISMO GT3 in the local GT3 series and it will make its racing debut at the Bathurst 12 Hour race next week, as it looks to defend its 2015 title.
During a recent test day at the Phillip Island circuit, both cars ran on the track with Rick Kelly and Florian Strauss behind the wheels. Also in attendance was Matt Simmons, the winner of the 2015 Nissan PlayStation GT Academy.
'Today is a display of how heavily committed Nissan is to Australian motorsport,' said Nissan Australia managing director and chief executive Richard Emery. 'Elements from all three pillars of our local motorsport activities – V8 Supercars, GT3 and the Bathurst 12 Hour, and the Nissan PlayStation GT Academy program – were all at Phillip Island. All is now set for a huge 2016 season, beginning with the Bathurst 12 Hour next month where the Nissan GT-R will strive to win back-to back victories at Mount Panorama, just as it did in 1991 and 1992.'
