Post Family uses car charging stations to travel to Nashville

Nissan leaf makes it from knoxville to Nashville

Quote:
By Anne Paine, The Tennessean

The Blink fast-charge station for electric cars was on the blink.

Efforts to use the two available plugs yielded nothing for Stephen Smith when he and his family arrived in Lebanon in their Nissan Leaf while traveling Monday from Knoxville to Nashville.

But all was not lost as the Smiths closed in on their destination -- a brother's house only 22 miles farther in Antioch

With 10 miles of available power left on their car, they could take advantage of a slower charger -- also at the Blink station at Cracker Barrel. It took about an hour, but the boost gave enough energy for 30 miles.

Love the idea of an electric car and like the leaf but it is impractical for my driving needs. Hope they come up with more charging stations then maybe i can consider a leaf.

My dad has a LEAF and it works great (as a second car, my mom has a Volvo S40) for him. Basically just drives it to work (and charges it there there are charging stations) and drives it on any trips around town. There are some other towns nearby we have to visit, but they're all within the round trip range, so it really works great for where we are, plus is fine for runs to the nearest major airport and back.

While that is pretty cool and all, I really do live in fear of the day when electric cars become the norm... I pretty much live to hear the V8 rumble in my truck. Or the Diesel sound of my suburban.

Yes, according to the article, we need more charging stations and it also said they were free for now, they will eventually start charging to charge the car. I wonder how much. I think the leaf is made for short trips. church and target and work if its not far

as long as there are charging stations, then you're good to go and the charge is free for now. the cool thing is that you can charge the car before you get home then you don't have to charge it when you get home.
I think that's a car you would have to keep under a car garage especially in the winter.
have you had a chance to drive your Dad's Leaf?

maybe 10 years from now they might start selling electric trucks.
Didn't think about this, but if only the electric motor and the battery runs the car, that means no more cold air intakes, exhaust, headers, ignitions, turbo...wow no more fuel pump or fuel regulator problems, good bye coolant, oil, ect... and then we would be asking if adding extra double A batteries would void the warranty.... who knows

the technology we have today is amazing. a lot of things changed in just 10 years

Yeah I've driven it a bit, it's really fun, and I test drove one before he bought it, which is part of how I came to the conclusion it was a good choice. The thing drives much better than any of the hybrids we drove. I really like it actually. He almost got a Lexus CT200h which drives like a sack of potatoes. He is very happy he didn't get that car after having the LEAF, he really didn't like the way it drove and neither did I. LEAF drives great, in fact it reminds me a lot of the Versa, only quieter and nicer (not just cause electric, they did other stuff to make it quiet and cooshy) and it might have a bit more pick-up once you get on the gas. It's slow off the line because they limit it so you don't shred your tires with all the torque, but once you get going it gooooees. Drives more like a normal gas car than the hybrids do because the power train is so simple and not constantly mucking around. No transmission reminds me of the CVT, but smoother and you don't sort of feel it in the pedal the way you do with the CVT. Really feels great. Since the acceleration is so quiet it also just flat out feels faster, lots of people that drive it say they had no idea they were going as fast as they were...people instinctively drive slower or keep the revs low if they don't like noise...in the LEAF you really do need to check your speedo, it's sort of like driving a video game and not realizing you probably needed to break more for that corner...but in a good way somehow.
