When you press the OD button and you see it light up on the dash what happens is that it locks the tranny in a lower gear; short of like downshifting with a manual. However keeping it there actually lowers gas mileage, and yes it stands for overdrive...

You may have to go 45 mph plus to experience it working vs just seeing the light on the dash. My odyssey wont go into od til you exceed 45 mph.

Just because the mode switch for OD is on does not mean you are in OD, which is a non-literal term anyway on a CVT. The highest value there may be with it off, to use more engine braking like in the mountains. Other than that leave it on and alone, as you won't hear anything anyway, the CVT does all that smoothly with zero 'gear changes'.

If he lives in HI or PR the fastest they can go is 35mph so he may not be able to test it.

I have a 2012 Nissan Versa Hatchback 1.8L S trim automatic. I'm having the same problem. However, when I press the Overdrive button, my OD light on the dash doesn't even come on.
