So i bought an 07 Versa with 78,000 miles. Whenever I drive it over a speed bump or a bumpy road, I hear a “clunking” noise that sounds like its coming from right below where the center console would be (if this car had one). I’m very mechanically inclined, and I’ve always fixed issues on my cars, but this problem just escapes me. I have checked all front suspension parts and CV axles, and they all seem good. I have fixed most of the heat shield rattles, what an annoying problem. Any ideas on what this could be? Doesn’t feel like suspension due to it being included the middle of the car. Any help welcome!

I see that you fixed the heat shield rattles, but I would also check all the muffler and exhaust pipe hangers. I would also insure that all the welded points on the muffler and exhaust pipes are still solid. Sometimes a weld will fail and will cause the pipe or muffler to rattle. Good luck!! Sometimes the internal baffel inside the muffler will become detached, and will cause a rattling sound when going over bumps.

Funny you mentions that, the muffler was actually broken off from the exhaust pipe, so I welded it back on. I have checked it all the way down but maybe I need to check again. Thanks for your input!

Check the flange on the catalytic. They tend to rust out and or crack over time.

Think I have this problem on my 2011. I hear an exhaust leak and can slightly smell exhaust in the car when driving. I took my Versa to Velazquez, at Illinois and RTE 31 in Aurora, and they showed me where it was leaking at the flange at the CAT. Can just the flange be replaced or am I looking at a CAT replacement? They quoted me $530 for a direct fit CAT back replacement which includes a new muffler as well.

No. You need a whole new cat. I went to a place in Naperville when I had mine done. Forget the name, but is over by the Thorntons on Ogden and N. Aurora/Indian Trail.

That's what I was afraid of. The place you're talking about sounds like Naperville Exhaust Works. Went there about 10 years ago for a CAT back install on a 97 Escort Wagon. Think I paid, even back then, like $850!

I've used Velazquez several times over the last few years. Believe it or not, but one of the service writers at Gerald Nissan recommended them when my exhaust flange rusted out on my Versa. Nissan wanted to replace the whole exhau$t. Velazquez just welded on a collar and removed the flange. Think I paid like $40. Nissan's option was MUCH MORE expen$ive.
