I saw one of the new leather wrapped steering wheels in the 2010's. I think they look awesome and am interested in swapping.How hard is something like that? Is the airbag IN the steering wheel? Or is that just a cover. If its just a few wires to be unplugged...

I'm guessing your steering wheel is not leather to begin with?
Mine is, and it's covered up w/ an HK cover !

Yes mine has the stitching. I have the leather one on my 08 V.

I don't think his is leather. The ones without the stitching are not leather (at least that is what I read before).

Thats what I was thinking... but there is a big difference between Leather and Plastic.. I couldn't image they could ever get mixed up. lol

Ya I am not too sure what materials that wheel is made of, but I am pretty sure it's not leather. The leather wrapped wheels have the stitching on them.
Ok, fine. So my steering wheel is made of plastic because I have the S apparently.
ILMV, yours is not the same as the one pictured with the "wood" interior. Yours comes with the leather steering wheel as you have the SL.
Since everyone put their 2 cents in and we have now determined that there are 2 different steering wheels (as I pointed out earlier) lets get back to the ORIGINAL post.
Does anyone have knowledge of whats behind the steering wheel, ease of replacement, or even know if it can be swapped?

Can it be swapped, yes. In order to remove the wheel, you'll need to disconnect the battery to remove power from the airbag. There's two screws (one on each side) that you need to remove. They are behind the small round covers on the sides. The airbag will come out with ease after that. Disconnect all the wires from the airbag and steering wheel and take the nut that holds the wheel off. Assembly is reverse of this. Make sure you align the wheel with the mark on the column. I don't know if any controls will work if you change from an S to an SL steering wheel. They may be wired idfferently on the connectors.

don't worry if the bag is blown or not your airbag will fit in the leather wrapped steering wheel and the spots for the switches can also be swapped over. to remove the air bag bolts behind 2 small plastic panels are torx bolts.

Actually my steering wheel IS the same as the one pictured w/ the wood interior. Take a closer look at the steering wheel and you'll notice the stitching on it.
That interior w/ the wood bits is from an SL. Hence the tech package, cruise control, auxiliary plug, and nicer stitched seats ... all part of the SL model.
