HI all, this is my first post here.

My girlfriend has a 2010 Versa SL with the CVT transmission (75,000 miles).

She just informed me that she has NEVER changed the CVT fluid before because her dad said she does not have to :surprise

How bad is this? Should she get the fluid changed immediately or not?

I have heard mixed things about changing transmission fluid on a car with higher miles. She drives very conservative and it shifts fine, but I am worried about long term longevity.

It's overdue for flushing. Flush it. It's a CVT (not traditional AT). And, it's a Nissan CVT - which are KNOWN for problems, especially if not maintained per service schedules.

Fortunately, on this car (year) you should be able to do it yourself. Check to ensure there is a CVT dipstick on your car. If there is, you are good to go.

Nissan started eliminating all CVT dipsticks from their car models thereby preventing owner's from checking, maintaining, servicing, topping up, draining, flushing their own CVTs.

Use Nissan's spec CVT fluid. Check your OM, but I'm fairly certain it is NS-2 on yours.

Done right, the flush (not drain) should require about 3 qts more than capacity (given in OM).

Nissan FSM states to flush with capacity + 30%. It takes that amount till all the old oil is pumped out of the torque converter/pump/sump/filter/gearing ... and the new clean NS-2 is observed running out (of the flushing hose into the catch container).

It's a(very) doable job.

The recommended Nissan CVT juice change interval is 60,000 miles. It's overdue, but not as bad you probably thought.

That said, the previous poster is correct about Nissan having issues with their earlier CVT transmissions... It's not clear if they've been completely resolved yet either.

While the car isn't under warranty anymore, it sounds like it's been running fine.

If I were you, I would let the dealership do the job. It would be just my luck to change the CVT fluid and then suddenly have the transmission die... An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

If Nissan changes the CVT juice and the tranny does give up the ghost, there's a good chance that Nissan would repair or replace the CVT. If you do the work yourself, I doubt Nissan will cover you, since it's technically out of warranty.

Would your girlfriend forgive you if the CVT died right after you flushed it?

She should have changed it at 60K... I would let her pay the dealership to do it, just to be on the safe side.

this vehicle should be covered by nissans CVT extended warranty. Bring it down to the dealer and do whatever it is they recommend. That way it's on the books for being done and the transmission given a clean bill of health. That should cover you in case your CVT blows up later.
