24 hours of LeMons

Hey guys, so I want to race at 24 hours of Lemons this year and I need a car.. Only rule is that it has to be under $500 (minus the cost of safety equipment). I'd prefer something that already has some aftermarket support so that I can get things like seat brackets and roll cage plans cheap. The car has to be outfitted with a non reclining race seat, a roll cage, and a fire extinguisher. Any suggestions? If you're bored, feel free to check out craigslist (maine) and post up links! So far I've looked at a BMW 525, a VW Jetta, and a Dodge Neon. The neon was the only thing that looked promising so far, but it doesn't have much power. The race is going to be on a road course.

I would recommend a diesel BMW or WV. Diesel has much better range than gasoline. both German company have a large pedigree on diesel cars winning endurance races.
That Neon would be interesting. Throw a fart can on it, altezza tail lights, a bunch of stickers, and you're good to go. :D
500 is just for the car, you can put as much as you want into making it safe. Roll cage and approved harness are a must can't compete without, big breaks needed to make hard turns. I would really suggest a fuel cell, I know that goes beyond what you want to spend but can't stay in a race if have to stop for gas every few hours.

Yes, the cost of safety equipment is not included in the price of the car, and while fuel cells are not required, I was thinking of including one. I was figuring that under racing conditions we'd have to stop for gas every 3 hours or so, depending on the size of the tank. maybe a little less.
Fuel cell is just a suggestions seeing as how your gonna pay about 1000 for a new one, price makes it hard to decide. I think that with tank and fuel cell there's a 24 gallon limit. So you can get up there. I know they have a new seat requirement has to be one of the approved seats, run 800 new. It's a cool race a lot ppl have fun they dress up or dress their cars up with nonfictioning wings or fake body tied to the roof. ( not sure if can strap things to car still ) the entry fee is a bit much 500 for the team plus 75 from each non driving member then 100 for each driving member of said team.
Some themes are pretty funny, nothing like a bunch of guys working on a car before the race in French maids outfits.

If you were to do that we need pictures. Maybe even incorporate it into the forum's banner.
