Hi all, I have one of those problems that is giving a bit of grief to track down, and as the next area for investigation I'm trying to work out where the ventilation system ducting runs, and in particular where the inlet is taken from. I have the workshop manual, but none of the diagrams are helping me in this quest. I have a 2009 1.8 6 speed hatchback.

If you can describe how I'd find this, or better still point at it on a photo, any help will be gratefully received.

You will still need IP to be able to get at it.
Just download the whole FSM from there.

FYI, section fwd doesn't work. Since that is table of contents, the one from 2008 or 2010 will be fine.

You are right of course, a temporary stupid moment there.

I can't really see why anybody getting that far would not get the entire manual anyway, you will never get a better value if you have one of the cars.

Thanks for the link to the manual gang. That seems to be the same one I was looking at. Mostly having trouble relating it to reality. Ah well, I've not had much chance to look in the last week (and this week looks unreasonably busy too) but I'll keep trying to see if I can make headway with it.

The problem is compound I suspect. The primary symptom is "engine smell" coming in while stationary if the AC is running. And yeah, I realize that primarily points at an exhaust leak, and there certainly was one of those, but I believe that's fixed. But I'm sill getting "engine bay" odors, without actually being exhausty smelling. And just to give a bit of background, this car was crashed and the kids that "fixed" it botched everything. I have noticed that most of the air ducts that I can see/reach easily (the engine inlet) have been damaged in reassembly, such that they don't seal even moderately closely, and I suspect that the ventilation system (which I'm almost sure they also messed with, though I'm less sure why) has been thrown back together with similar gaps in pipes and connectors.

Might be wrong, but that's the current avenue of investigation at least.

Anyway, thanks for all the input. I'll go do some more poking, reading, and poking again!

Actually, there is another very common reason for smells there and that is valve cover gasket leaking oil to burn and then the fumes get picked up by the low pressure area at base of windshield that is responsible for the fresh air feeding into the a/c.

Interesting, I'll check that out too. But I think perhaps you answered my original question... Are you saying that the air inlet is just at the base of the windshield?

Yes, but under the plastic cowl cover there. A big channel underneath that vents off all water and the intake is in it. Sometimes a lot of leaves and such can clog it to cut off flow and make bad smells. Rodents love to nest there as well.
