Even I'm skeptical doing this mod myself, there's a bunch of guys on another forum who are doing it. Some are already experiencing knocking and weird noises from the engine, others aren't.

If the V has no distributor, then I'm not sure. I can look through the service manual and check out the section it's located.

On my car, there is a distributor bolt that can be adjusted about 5-10 degrees CW and it can retard the timing significantly.
On topic, Nissan can do this if you request them to on the V.

You could use at least 87 octane, but that's really pushing it. Best bet is to keep it above 91
