Amazin' V: I'm On My Way To 40 MPG...!!!

11246 Views 79 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  JohnLocke
I got 37 mpg on my 8th tank, doing 80% highway. I'm on my 10th tank with only 3300 miles on the OD. Once I'm at around 10K, I can see my V getting 40+ mpg easily...!!! And that's IF my engine is fully broken in by then... my old car started getting its best fuel economy at 25K.

- neutral to stoplights, stop signs, and exit ramps
- turn on car, drive immediately
- 65 on the highway, 70 max

Versa engine is amazingly frugal.

Lol. I had the sound shield added by the dealer as it was part of my extended warranty. My cabin noise in the city and on the freeway is minimal. My relatives more expensive cars have more road noise then my Versa. My last tank I got almost 29 mpg. Almost all city with ac and no special way of driving. Lol.
So...how do you go about getting that installed? I have pretty intense road noise in my V, I think...I hear when I hit all bumps, roadwork, 18 wheelers, etc.

My car is only a little more than one year old now so I wonder if I could have that done for a cheap price at the dealership?

Pardon me for not knowing much about it, but I'm definitely interested!:biggrin5:
It was done by my dealership before I picked I up. That's why I had to wait a few days before I could pick her up. It was included with the car because I extended my warranty. So they did the sound shield, rust inhibitor, paint protection and fabric protection. He car smelt funny at pick up but it was only because of all the things that were sprayed before pick up.

I hear no road noise in my car. Honestly all I hear is the whistling noise from my hood deflector. I can keep my stereo on a really low setting and I can hear it perfectly. That's why I love driving my car because it is smooth to drive and extremely quiet. And I have no crackling or creaking so I have no complaints. You could ask your dealership about the cost. I honestly have
no clue because it was given to me as part of my warranty.
Oh, I see what you're saying. That's cool...I personally wasn't there when all of the paper work on my car was done so I'm really not sure about my warranty but I may look into it. Thanks for the information!
No problem. I extended to 7 years as the regular warranty wasn't very much. So my dad said I should just pay to extend it.
Man, this tank is sucking.

I'm probably gonna end at 350-380 miles. This sucks.

Why is it worse? More city? A/C on?
I have no idea. I've been driving the same. Same trips to NH to see the GF. Haven't used AC at all because it's been wet and cool in Boston. It does happen, though. Bad tank of gas. :(
you can't really judge just on one tank. MPG is more of an average. There could be bad gas, pump shutting off too quick, low tire pressure, alot of different things can affect it. Hell if it was just a really windy week that will screw you up. Now if you get several tanks that are much less then before you know something is up.
I need to fill up with fuel ... maybe tomorrow. I am almost on empty, but the light is not on yet.

So far I have 440kms on this tank. It's pretty much all city now, with A/C.

do you stick with the same gas stations? like just shell/speedway/etc? or do you mix it up?

i try and only run shell, unless there isn't anything else around

some stations can be different, too...there was this bp station that i drove by all the time, but i refused to get gas there because it always flooded in heavy rains and i never trusted their gas after that but other stations were "fine" (but now i wouldn't dare put bp in my car :))
I stick to the major brands... I've always had good gas mileage with HESS, so the majority of the purchases are from there. I also go to Mobil. I won't go to mom & pop gas stations or budget gas stations as they usually sell inferior gas.
I changed my oil today. Mobil 1 5W-30 (4 quarts) and Mobil 1 Oil Filter.

:D

Your car only takes 3.5 quarts. If going for maximum mpg you will not want to overfill. More oil equates to more resistance which means less mpg. I too usually put in a little extra as I like mine to sit more towards the "H". I don't know why I am just more comfortable with that.

BTW if you ever see your post where it says edited by me it's usually me hitting a mod edit button on your post instead of a quote button. Sorry about that everyone.
Damn. I hope the extra half quart doesn't mess with my economy... that's so dumb, though. Can't buy half quarts and I don't want a half open bottle of engine oil sitting around. Having an extra half quart won't harm my engine though, right?
Close enough, a few drops less or more isn't going to kill the engine
I filled up in the US today ... Gosh everything is so much cheaper !
I don't know how many times I have posted this but I am glad I have it saved.

The 3.2 stated in your link is most likely without oil filter change. Don't worry you will be fine with the extra oil in there. You would probably need over a whole quart for it to really make a difference. You will tell when it's way over filled because you will foam up the oil and get air in the lifters. Then your car will sound like a diesel.

Just filled up. 31.8. Pretty dismal showing. :(
Honestly I would disregard this tank. If your next one is just as bad then I would worry. That is the lowest tank I have ever seen out of a 1.6 and that is including journalists who wrote reviews on the 1.6.
