Amazin' V: I'm On My Way To 40 MPG...!!!

11237 Views 79 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  JohnLocke
I got 37 mpg on my 8th tank, doing 80% highway. I'm on my 10th tank with only 3300 miles on the OD. Once I'm at around 10K, I can see my V getting 40+ mpg easily...!!! And that's IF my engine is fully broken in by then... my old car started getting its best fuel economy at 25K.

- neutral to stoplights, stop signs, and exit ramps
- turn on car, drive immediately
- 65 on the highway, 70 max

Versa engine is amazingly frugal.

Honestly I would disregard this tank. If your next one is just as bad then I would worry. That is the lowest tank I have ever seen out of a 1.6 and that is including journalists who wrote reviews on the 1.6.
I thought JL had a 1.8?

Journalists do performance tests and thrash the crap out of the cars... they're the least reliable source for fuel economy tests (unless they're doing fuel economy tests).

But yeah, one tank is not enough to go on.

I filled last night on my way home, so no driving yet. I find the better I do before the needle hits the F, the better my tank is. My needle doesn't usually hit the F point until about 80-100 miles.
Lol. They sound like me haha. I'm happy with the car no matter what mileage I get. Its fun to drive.

That was my point exactly. Their "observed" mpg includes 0-60 runs and beating the snot out of the car. so it should be what the EPA states or below. I seldom see one that beats the EPA mpg rating yet the Versa 1.6 did in every article I read.

It's not a fuel economy test, rather it's just the fuel economy they got from the vehicle while in their possession.
Everything is back to normal. It was just a bad tank. I've got 78 miles on this tank and the needle hasn't even droppes down to the Full mark yet.

:D

And I got some mega road trips coming up...

I'm going to Worcester for a boxing match this Thursday, and immediately after that, going to Great Barrington to visit a friend (4 hours total).

Then I'm going camping with the GF in the White Mountains for a week on Sunday (3.5 hours from Boston).

Then I'm going to visit a friend in Bar Harbor, Maine on the Tuesday I get back (5.5 hours from Boston) - will be shooting for FIVE HUNDRED MILES on this tank.

:D

Sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun, enjoy your trip!
Sounds like fun! Enjoy your vacation.

I have the first two weeks of July off, and the last two weeks of August off from work. I'm looking forward to that! I really hope my dad is still in Cali in July. I want to fly out there :D

Took an impromptu trip to NH to see the GF (she promised it would be worth it - it always is)... 99.9 miles so far. Needle is a smidge under the Full!

:D

Where's everybody's needle at 99 miles? JW!

Thanks, guys!

But I'm avoiding reality. My priority now should be putting together a resume and looking for a JOB. Government will come looking for school loans payments in about 5 months.

:(

Lol !

Yeah I know the feeling. Have to pay back the student loans ... I'm in the process of paying them off ... it's getting there!

Let us know how that turns out! I'm on a good tank myself right now. Just got stock in some stop n' go though so that hurt me.
Rob, out of curiousity, how many miles are you usually at by the same place?
Question for johnlocke: where do you put fuel? What station?

Reason I ask is because last week when I was in buffalo I filled up at exon (I think) and so far this is one of my best tanks. I have over 400kms on this tank and I have over a quarter tank left. I have never had that before. Is this dependent on where one gets fuel? Because my driving habits have not changed.
ahhhh i only average like 300-310 to the tank, but perhaps it is do to my heavy foot.

I envy all of you....
ILUV,

It's a FACT that brand name gas is better for fuel economy... I've bought gas from "mom and pop" stations before and they ALWAYS yield much lower fuel figures. I stick with HESS (right near my house) or MOBIL (close to my house). But I've also had excellent luck with Shell, Phillips 66, Sunoco, etc.. If you check my Fuelly, it's mostly HESS and MOBIL. And I also try not to fill up until 30+ miles after the E light comes on. Oh, and I just broke my best record...

Thanks for the info JL.

Normally I fill up at Canadian Tire which is a big company here in Canada. The main reason I fill up there is because it is beside the bank that I work at. So it's easier to fill up there before getting on the expressway.

I might try filling up at Sunoco next time. I always used to take my Accent there, but then once the CT gas bar opened up beside our branch, I just started going there with the Versa.

When I got home from work today, I had 465kms with a 1/4 still left :) I now know how you feel about the gas mileage. It is a good feeling !
