Bad Mileage

Hi..

I have 2008 - 1.6L versa.

I do not get good mileage compared to what is should be getting as of 1.6L nissan engine.

I usually try to drive around 100 kmph if im on highway.

I do some quick acceleration till i reach around 50 kmph... (not crossing 3000 rpm).... then continuing with gentle acceleration and then cruise at the desired speed...

i get around 8.2L/100 km at the best and an average of 9-10 L/100 km.....
which is much lower for a small car... (i know 2.4L cars getting this economy)
i expect 6 or 7 L/100 km....

what could i do to improve efficiency?
what is the most economical speeed for versa? [i get 2000 rpm for 80 kmph]
should i accelerate gently in lower speeds, or do a quick accelerate to reach the cruising speed quickly?

tips tips? =)

Does idling my car for ten minutes before I drive it really burn that much fuel, though? With the CVT, good driving behaviour, and a broken-in engine, I feel that my 2012 Versa should be getting better mileage than HALF of what the company advertises.
That wastes a TON of fuel and money. Hence why I never let my car idle to warm up. I simply get in and "baby" it for a few miles to prevent excess wear before driving like normal.

A motor becomes its most efficient when it is warm and at the correct operating temperature. A cold motor is very inefficient and it takes longer to warm up idling then to start driving it.

You can't blame a company for false advertising when the product isn't being used as intended.
I noticed also in my cvt Altima, it takes longer now for the cvt to warm up and the lockup torque convertor to activate, which allows the revs to drop.
When engine is idling in park, transmission is not warming up at all, and won't until it is driving.
Man it's cold in Timmins, gonna be -23C Mon and Tues nights, won't help the mpgs much.:(
Does the 2012 sedan have a real engine temperature gauge? Mine has idiot lights for cold and hot only. Engine will not be most economical until full operating temperature is reached. I go easy on er when my blue cold light is still on...um...usually lol:driving:
Will post my 2012 grand total fuel economy soon for V and Alty
The electronic engine controls (which also affects the auto tranny) are programmed to hold a gear a little longer when cold. This ensures good drivability and helps to warm up the engine faster which ulimately improves gas mileage and reduces emissions. If any of you are old enough to remember carburetored cars, you will understand what I mean by drivability in the cold with a cold engine. On the CVT, it will hold a lower "gear" ratio for the same reason on a cold engine.

Idling for ten minutes is quite wasteful in that you are getting no real benefit for the fuel you are burning.

The winter blend fuel has finally made it to our pumps. I have noticed almost 2 mpg drop in the Outback on the last two fillups.
So basically you guys are saying that this delay in my CVT is normal in cold weather, and that driving it while it is doing this is harmless - if not beneficial?

I idled only because I thought this CVT issue was caused by the cold (which I guess it is), so I won't idle it as much anymore.
^^ i have an 08 CVT (From Hamilton area too).
Only time my car idles is when I have to clean the windows off, which isn't often since I park in the garage.
Otherwise I just start her up and go.
I drive my 1.8 manual with vigor everywhere I go and always get 30 mile to the gallon. I babied it for the first 1000 miles never going over 3000 rpms even when at operating temperature and got around 38 MPG. Since then I have just enjoyed the revs and rarely see 6th gear.

Yes, that's been my experience.:thumb2: If the cvt craps out on my Altima while i treat it this way, i will surely let everyone know!

CVT has a long warranty too :)

Mines at 80K, still doing fine.
I just got 700 kilomtres to a tank (45 litres). According to Google, I'm getting almost 44 miles per gallon. I drive approximately 70% highway and 30% city. My Versa has the 1.8L and the CVT transmission.

I'm happy with that.
44?

Those numbers probably equate closer to 36 mpg. The CVT definitely gets better gas mileage than the 4 speed auto.

Concerning the "need" to warm up the CVT for 10 minutes prior to driving it. I am not sure what the owners manual says, but I doubt it instructs owners it is necessary to do that. I am sure our friends in the middle east thank you.

How do you figure that?
i calc 44mpg as well. don't know what it is in US gal though

good mileage since ur 70% highway.

im 65% CITY DENSE TRAFFIC - 35% Highway...
and i get about 430-450 kms to a tank (same - 45 litres)..

My max MAAAX ever is 560 kms and i was like WOW!
I have a question.

What is the most efficient speed to drive for highway driving.
What is the speed that saves most fuel; which is most economical driving in highway?

70km/h?
80km/h?
90km/h?
100km/h?
110km/h?
120km/h?

I have the 1.6L HR16DE with 4-speed auto.

I am fed-up of traffic, and i am going to take a 40 km long cut, which will however make me reach home in same time since there is no traffic.

hehe i want to bump this.
want it to appear in the headlines, so someone reads it and replies asap.

Curious for the answer to this question.

Admins - sorry for double posting spam :p
lowest rpm's possible. Basically do the posted speed limit and it will be the best mpg's you can get. You have the worst possible tranny for good mpg's. Basically you need to try and go the slowest you can in 4th gear which is not up to you. The transmission decides. You can read up on CleanMPG, An authoritative source on fuel economy and hypermiling for tips on driving to maximize gas mileage.

Well i can reach 4th gear on 50 or 60 km/h :p
according to the instantaneous readout in altima, about 60km/h, cvt

The (36 mpg) number I presented earlier was based on US Gallons.

US Gallon = 3.785 L
Imperial Gallon = 4.546 L
Question : HR16DE engine

Route 1) Bumper to bumper traffic.
Extreme stop and go. Harsh acceleration at any moment where gap is seen.
Distance : 22 km
Time taken : 40-45 mins

Route 2) Empty Road.
Fast driving. No stop and go, but fluctuations of 120km/h to 140km/h (74 mph to 87 mph).
Distance: 65 km
Time taken : 50-55 mins

Route 2 is mentally more relaxing since its open roads, no battling, nicely driving.

My Question - which route is more economical in terms of fuel consumption?
