What's everyone found is the best way? The oven method i can't do because my oven isn't big enough for one light, not by a long shot. No idea what kind of ovens everyone else has but they don't fit. A heat gun does work, but it's a pain in the ass, and butchers the housing, i bought an aftermarket (TYC) pair of lights on eBay because mine were faded beyond repair, and maybe the aftermarket will be butyl, and also i used acetone on one of the lense' and found it softens that plastic like butter, so the lense is essentially dicked...

Whatever idiot that did an HID retro on a set who said they came apart EASY is talking out of his ass. They aren't butyl and they don't come out easy by any standard.

I concur - I'm in the middle of a HID retrofit on mine as well - Its a 2006 Tiida but its been in a crash - the original 2006 headlamp (with no glare shield) opened fine, but the newer one (from a later model - 2008?, WITH the glare shield - thanks panel-beaters) was nigh-on impossible to open.

I gave up and bought some TYC housings - the first one I made a bit of a mess with the heat gun (bent the plastic outwards trying to pry up the lens), the second time I took it a lot slower and easier and pulled it out by hand, slowly working from the front to the rear.

I ended up fitting the new series D2S bixenons from theretrofitsource - you have to hit the back of the reflector where the bulb goes pretty heavily with a grinder so you can screw the bolt into it properly - some people leave out the rubber washer - this may make life easier, especially since I had a lot of trouble getting a D2S connector from the ballast to fit - I ended up using Bosch AL ballasts, mounting the ballast under the headlamp, and the ignitor on the back of the ballast.

Light output is absolutely brilliant.

I did notice these for sale, pre-retrofitted with the Mini H1's (of course after I had done mine) if you are so pre-disposed.

I thought the shrouds were ugly but I think that's a matter of taste.

I just need to open them to black out the housings. So maybe just use the heat gun, get the edge nice and hot, and slowly lift and lift until it starts coming? I saw a technique with a cutting tip on soldering iron, cut through it cleanly and like butter, then you can just silicone that gap to re-seal.
