Brake Noises/squeaks?

11255 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Hschlick84
I recently got back from Christmas break for two weeks and I had to leave my Versa home for the time I was away, keeping in mind with the cold weather/not being started, when I got home I started it right away and drove it around town for a little while to warm her up.

As I was driving, I started noticing that when I would apply the brakes to stop in traffic/traffic lights, there would be a slight squeaking/chirping noise coming from the brakes/engine (I'm not sure which) when the car was idle. The noise was not overly loud, just barely noticeable and it would stop when I took my foot off of the brake.

Could this be simply from not being driven for two weeks and the cold? Or is this something to be concerned about?
:confused5:
Does anyone know what I am talking about/have any experience?

Thanks in advance!

By the way, I am going to the dealer for my first service check up at 3,200mi (going early before 3,750mi for convenience) so maybe they will let me know if anything is out of the ordinary.

Up here in CT if we let our cars sit for a few days the brakes will sound horrible. They build up surface rust so quick. Usually after driving for the day or two it's back normal.
My brakes squeak after being parked overnight (in the garage or outside), or after being parked outside all day while I'm at work. After about 30 seconds of driving, the squeaking goes away. This only happens in the winter months though.

Also, my co-worker has a 2009 S Hatchback, and she experiences the same thing in the winter months.
Give it a few days to burn off/loosen the surface rust and it should go away :)
I think the brakes pads that came with the car along with the shoes are utter crap. Just upgrade to something better. Search around online and shop!
if none of those suggestions work, then maybe you have a little debri on your break pads, go 60mph and hit ur breaks hard, not so that u lock them but enough to stop really fast. that should clear out any debri/dirt if there is any in there. works for me all the time.
lol yeah not too hard it might warp your rotors lol in any case you do just get a new rotor :p its cheaper than resurfacing :p
well i didnt mean like thrash ur breaks but stop somehwat quickly
I've been having issues with my brakes squeeking when I reverse on my driveway. It doesnt make noise when I'm braking in drive.
one question do you have hubcaps i know with mine it was making that sound when i had one that was slightly damaged
Don't worry, mine squeak too occasionally. Although now that she is 'squeaky' clean, no brakes have been squeaking. I ALWAYS back my car into my driveway, and it usually only squeaks after she's been sitting outside in the cold for a bit. After I drive her out of the driveway the squeaking is gone by the first stop sign.

My brakes also squeak when the car has been parked for a while. After it warms up, and I've been tooting around for a bit, it goes away.
i live in florida and i've only ever noticed that when the car has been sitting for a couple days or when it was stupidly cold earlier this month. with the old car i had 1999 saab 9-5 (piece of crap!!!) the brake squeaking was constant...i got brand new brakes and still every time i hit the brakes even a little it would screech. cheap brakes probably but i was dreading it would be the same with my versa when i first heard the brakes squeaking but i've had no problems since.

Even when you replace your brakes they will squeak when they are new. My dad replaced all brake related parts on his minivan this past summer, and it squeaked for about a month. Now it's quiet ... but it was really loud at first.
its soooo annoying, i want to get rd of the noise
