If it's the brakes that are making the scrapping sound it's likely you're already cutting into the rotor meaning you need to get them seen about as soon as possible. If it's cutting into the rotor you'll also need to replace the rotor. It only takes a few minutes to remove a wheel and check the condition of the brake pads occasionally and by doing this you know when the brake pads need to be changed before ruining other parts. When the pads start getting thin it's a good time to start thinking about replacement. I've been driving for about 45 years and have never let the brake pads wear to the point I ruined a rotor. I was doing other work on one of my cars a few weeks ago and noticed my pads were down to about 1/8" thick so I'm planning to change them Monday.
