Between the rubber and the spring holder? What dimension are you talking about? Between the sidewall and the spring perch on the strut?

The gearing is what makes a 6 speed sort of peppy, or at least adequate for city driving. I don't understand how the CVT/Auto guys drive these things around, a 1.8 let alone a 1.6, gutless gutless gutless!

Did you go in for the upper strut bearing involuntary recall?

The spring perch sounds like it might be right. The edge of the tread is the other point.
I live in a semi rural area and don't need peppy. Did you know the 6 speed wasn't really designed to go over 60 mph? Over 60 the fuel economy drops off quickly and high rpms are bad for an engine.

Never heard of the recall. Tell me more.

Gears are pretty simple, there are no free lunches (that's the door the CVT opened up, infinite gearing). When you make a driven gear smaller you get speed at the expense of torque/leverage, and vice versa. Part of the reason i love manuals, sheer simplicity, anyone can understand and fix a manual tranny. In fact, the best way to think of gears, is a bunch of levers spinning about a central point. That's what gears are... rotational levers. It's all about mechanical advantage.

5 and 6 are both overdrives if i'm not mistaken, but 6th should have been a more drastic overdrive from 5th, should only be there as a cruising/top speed gear, that would never be used in the city. Just like 1st is basically useless. I embrace the close ratio gearbox that it is though, especially since i rarely do highway driving.

So... you're mostly starting out in second gear because 1st is basically useless?

BTW, I used to hot rod Chevys in the early 70s. Be careful what you say. :wink
I only use it to get going yeah. So you were around in the old school muscle car era eh? Seen all the technology and the rise of EFI, emissions control, etc. That is so cool. I'm 20 and a mechanic, i just love the whole car scene. This is my daily, i'm working on an 87 Porsche 928 S4 as my current project. 5.0 V8 32V, 316HP/303ft lbs stock, 5 speed manual (tranny in rear), black leather/vinyl interior, recent BC/CC Schwarz black paint. I have headers for it and took the engine out for inspection and a bunch of new parts. GTS cams (5.4L motor they put in 93-95's) with higher lift and a bit longer duration.

Are you a through and through muscle guy though? Whats your oppinion on the popularity of imports in the car scene, and all these new stupid ricer trends (stance, nonsense paint jobs, anime garbage)?
