Does removable key (from remote) have chip?

Hi, This is my first post.

Just bought a used 2011 Versa HB SL 1.8 with only 7444 miles on it. I love it!

It came with only one keyless entry fob (remote) with a key in it.

Another such keyfob for my fiancee is very expense at the dealer and still expensive on eBay.

I found a site that sells the key part only, without the remote, but this key is described as having no chip in it.

I tried removing the key from my remote and it opens and starts the car with the remote 60 feet away in the house -- without the remote IOW. What I don't know is whether my key has a chip in it.

Or will the keys I can buy without a chip work only to open the door but not start the car?

That's my question: do these keys come from the factory with a chip in them aside form the remote or are they just plain keys?

Thanks for any assistance.

Check your spare tire area. I found an extra brand new remote in a manilla envelope. Worth a try.

I just bought a '13 Versa SV Sedan with keyless entry.

As I always do with a new car, I had my hardware store make a plain, metal key for me that I keep in my wallet in case I lock myself out of the car.

The $2 duplicate key opens the doors, starts the engine, e.g., everything you expect a key to do.

The key fob with the electronic chip is only needed for the keyless entry functions.
Thanks for key info

Congrats on your new Versa, Dennis. I love my 2011.

I'm going to steal :) your idea about making a $2 key whenever I acquire a newer car.

I ended up buying 2 more smart key fobs with their contained keys -- one for my wife and one extra (for my key ring in my other pocket. I'm a belt AND suspenders kind of guy)

But until your post I didn't know whether the key had a chip in it.

Now, thanks to you, I do.

Enjoy the car.
