I need a duplicate key but Nissan says they have to reprogram a new key and it cost $98. I told them that I just needed a copy to get into a the car but they told me they were out of blanks. Ive been all around town but nobody has my blank to cut my key. I drive a 2014 Nisaan Versa 5-speed. I have a key now that looks like a regular key and it starts the car? (see pic). Does this key look like its "programmed" or have a chip?

Edit: I have a regular key too that looks chipped but I dont think it is.

There is no chip inside the key you posted.

FWIW, "Nissan" isn't the one giving false information, it's the dealerships...

My 2015 Versa Note S base model uses the DA34 X237 key blank.

Nissan DA34 / X237 Mechanical Key (KEYLINE) [KLN-BDA34] - $0.40 : American Key Supply, The Locksmith's Source for Keys & Tools

Looks like yours uses the same one or something similar. I suggest you find a full service locksmith. They should be able to cut you blanks for a few dollars each.

Here is a post I made in another thread yesterday on the same topic...

I have a 2015 Versa Note S, Manual Transmission, US base model. I went to a full service locksmith today to get a couple of spares made. Was told by the Nissan dealership (AutoNation) that my keys contained a transponder, but figured it would still be less expensive to go through my friend the locksmith...

To make a long story short, they put the key in the Transponder Code Reader machine, and VOILA! No Transponder Found!

He whipped up a quick copy using a generic DA34 X237 key blank, we left the original keys inside just to be sure, and BAM! My lil' Note fired right up!

Contrary to earlier posts in this thread asserting that every Nissan under the sun now uses a transponder/chipped key, at least for my 2015 Versa Note S MT, the generic unchipped blank works fine.

YOU DO NOT NEED A CHIPPED KEY for the 2015 US base model!

I recently had copies made of the ignition key on my 2015 Nissan Versa 1.6 S and the blanks used are exactly what is linked to in post #2 of this thread. $1.50 each for copies. The locksmith was astounded that a 2015 model year vehicle didn't have a chipped key. Initially he insisted it had to, until he checked it on some device and saw that it didn't.
