Engine Oil Questions/Discussion

Out here in the middle east, its all metric units - km's.

Whenever I go for a oil change outside (Rapid oil change or some other place other than dealer), they will ask -

"You want 3000 km's oil or 5000 km's oil?"

What they actually mean is that 3000 km's oil - next service after 3000 km and the respective for 5000 km...

I have only tried 5000 km...

I really wonder whats the difference...
I dont expect the technicians to know more... so do they actually mean 3000 miles oil and 5000 miles oil - but they say km to attract customers in shorter intervals...

What i really mean to ask is that, i always felt the oil does not get dirty even if i exceed the stated odo by 1500 kms...

whats going on :p

just another sub-question - how do i know if my oil has done its work and is due for changing by visual inspection? [i never saw black oil - i only saw orange-brown oil :p]

What's the cost difference between the 3K and 5K oil changes? Is it with conventional or synthetic oil? If its not much just keep going with 5K. Following the regular intervals stated by Nissan are your best recommendation.
I've run Castrol Syntec 0w30 for 16000kms and it came out orange brown still! A good indication to find out if your oil needs changing is a visual check, so if its below the minimum mark and black, change it!
all these r conventional...

i dont know the cost difference... because i never tried the 3K one :p

regarding my oil levels, its almost near the full/high mark when the car is due for service :p
nor does it turn black :p

sometimes i wonder... did i have to change the oil :p
Oh btw,

my friend found another shop that offers 10K oil.
we dont know if its synthetic/synthetic blend/conventional... but it was more costly...

what would be good on a versa - synthethic blend or synthetic or conventional considering the following factors 'individually'--

-Cost [which is least expensive, moderately expesnive, most expensive]
-Performance [BEST fuel economy, good fuel economy, relatively BAD fuel economy]
-maintenance intervals [Longest maintenance interval, moderate maintenance interval, shortest maintenance interval]

by comparing the above 3 oils with above 3 factors.. we can write a tiny article which many users can read :p :D

if i were to switch to synthetic, can i directly switch or i have to put synthetic blend for the first time...

trying my best not to spam :p

but i made a spreadsheet, which does not have the correct info...
if someone can update it with the correct info, we all can obtain some nice info about engine oils.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmrNV4JbUjQ_dFVMVk1mekQ2RFQyR1JoMGZqbWpZSGc

open the sheet and u'll understand what info im searching for :p
I threw in my two cents.
Here in Canada, Nissan specifies oil changes every 6000km for my Versa and Altima. Hmmm Altima due this week, now 114000km!
just another last last question :p

im currently on conventional.

i want to switch to synthetic.

can i directly switch or do i have to put synthetic blend once and then put synthetic the next time?
i went directly from conventional to synth

how long were u on this oil for? [how many months]

i was thinking of going for synthetic... but my mileage is very low...

it took me 7 months to finish 5000 kms.

imagine running the same oil for 21 months - or almost 2 years....
Often, if you aren't putting that many miles on your car, the individual trips are short. Starting the car, driving just a few miles and turning it off is a lot harder on oil than a long trip.

If this describes your usage and/or if you drive approx 12,000 miles per year or less, just change your oil twice a year. Once every six months. Short duration trips doesn't allow the engine to get up to sufficient operation to "burn off" the moisture that accumulates in an engine. You need to get that oil out of there to prevent corrosion and sludge. Twice a year using a good quality oil and filter. It is that simple. $30 every six months.

Conventional versus synthetic. Don't want to get into that argument. However, for my Versa, I have always used a good conventional oil. However on my last oil change I decided to use some synthetic oil and it eliminated the cold engine knock that so many Versas have. I used Valvoline synthetic because I got in on a good sale.

If you really want to learn about motor oil, go to bobistheoilguy and spend a few hundred hours on that forum.

i live in a frying pan desert where temperatures in summer go above 45 deg C (or 113 deg F)...

HAPPILY its winter now till march... so friendly temperatures of about 15 deg C to 25 deg C (59 deg F to 77 deg F)...

hehe oil forums :O....
proper high tech fluid mechanics stuff for an engineering student :p

What oil weight does the owners manual recommend for a middle east Versa? Here in the states the manual calls for 5w30. But if the temps stayed above 60 F, I would use 10w30 or higher.
^^yes i agree...
I'd suggest changing the oil every 3,000 miles or 4800km's. imo.

im not very sure, but its either 5w30 or 10w30.
i think its 5w30

found out the hidden treasure

the 3K oil is conventional oil
the 5K oil is synthetic blend (semi synthetic) - :O i had synthetic blend in my car.

no idea of 3K oil cost though
i guess just a way to earn money by setting maintenance interval of conventional oil to 3K KM... should be 3K miles or 6K KM.

did a visual inspection today, felt like a monkey checking the dipstick :p
sniffed it, i felt a slight taste (i mean smell) of burnt oil...
will change this weekend - 15th december
Cobone: Services deals in Sharjah, 22 point car check-up at 33 Auto Maintenance for 89 AED instead of 250 AED

Ok here it is

My manual reccomends SAE-5W30

But there's another picture attached over here from the manual which gives a range.

Now, the common range of temperatures in my location is 25 deg C to 50 deg C
except winter where it ranges from 15 deg to 30 deg C. [Its winter now].

Now i had a oil change today.
i had no control over the oil they put - because i bought an online voucher which carried out several other checkup's in addition at same cost...

THEY PUT SAE-20W50 [Please dont laugh haha :p] API Grade SF
:p that too conventional!
