Hello!

I just learned yesterday that my exhaust manifold is cracked. The mechanic told me that it is okay to drive with this problem, and that the car will never "die" because it gets worse, it will just get louder. He also told me that because the exhaust pipe is rusted where it meets the manifold, I might need a new exhaust pipe (which, all said and done, would cost me upwards of 2 grand). So, for obvious reasons, I am not having this repair done yet.

I have two questions about this:

1) Is it really okay to drive with this problem? My car won't die in 4 months as I'm driving to work in the middle of a blizzard and strand me 15 miles from anything, will it? :)

2) Is this a common problem with Versa's? The google searches that I have done for this problem have not revealed much of anything related to the manifold (though I have found a lot related to the heat shield, but that's a whole different problem).

Thanks for any help!

It shouldn't kill the car, but like the mechanic said it will def get louder with time since it will probably just continue to grow with time. Maybe you may be better off getting a full new aftermarket exhaust? I know it's not the cheapest way to go, but it definitely won't be around 2 grand. more like 500-800 I would imagine.

If the leak is bad enough it could cause the CEL to come on depending on where the leak is in relation to the O2 sensor. Be wary though, because if the computer thinks the motor is running lean it will go in to "safe mode"and pour extra fuel to compensate and protect it from damage. Running with extra fuel can foul plugs and cause extra carbon buildup.

no shop should charge 2k for an exhaust job. You can go get a custom exhaust made with high quality components for less than $1000
