since you live in Canada, the temperatures should be cold.
Use oil rating - SAE 5W-30.
Any good branded oil should do.
Semi Synthetic might be a good option.

For oil filters, either go with stock or Purolator Pureone Gold.

Hey, I live in the GTA in Ontario. Correct 5W30 is best for our climates.

As far as oil goes, I just switched to full synthetic Amsoil and there is a slight notice of improvement in power and less noise, in general. I was just running standard oil before, whatever the local dealer or shop I went to for price was using. I think I am going to stick with full syn for my SL, and do changes every 8-10K KM or so. For filter, if you are going to stretch out changes past 3-4 months and 4-5K KM, then pay for a premium filter. Otherwise, just use standard FRAM or other that you can get at CDN Tire or elsewhere. Even EBay you can get Nissan OEM Filters for cheap.

Hope that helps. Really depends on your driving, how hard you drive, how many KM's per year, etc.

Once my oil changes are done at the dealer I will be switching to Pennzoil Platinum as it is an excellent synthetic - especially for the price.

For filters, the only ones I use on my Honda is Bosch. Fram and many of the other cheap brands use cardboard endcaps and cheap springs. Heck, some don't even have bypass valves. The Bosch filters are essentially the same as K&N but without the nut on the filter for the wrench. They have high quality filter material and tons of pleats.

How many miles or km do you have? switching to synthetic oil with high miles can cause oil leaks.

Another user of 5w30 full synthetic here.
I put in semi-synth at 210000km, and have occasionally heard some piston slap or other noise.
Will be returning to full synth at 220000km change.
I mostly use Fram entry level filters, with some others thrown in.
This Walmart SuperTech cheapie has inadequate circulation

Yerp, anything in this game is "You get what you pay for".....

Try taking an expensive oil filter and a cheap one, cut them both open and have alook whats inside....guarantee the cheaper filter has much less 'filter paper' and at lower micron level too :)

Those oils look awesome to me. I buy whatever synthetic is on sale.
I'd use a filter with more flow holes though, especially if you can get a better price from your shop.
And check web for filters with superior first-pass filtration. Will also say suitable for 10-16000km etc

I can't really recommend you guys oils personally, as far as brands go as I don't think you get the same there as here, but I switched from a Castrol 5W-30 to a Liqui Moly 5W-30 and noticed an immediate increase in response, engine ran quieter and later on better fuel economy.

You get what you pay for! If you guys get Ryco filters, I highly recommend those.

^they will do, and the costlier filter [the Mobil1] will do a better job longer...ya get what ya pay for as always.
i always buy the longer filter that fits Nissan trucks etc for more filtration, has same size base. i think a few people here use that trick:)
edit filters were on sale, fram about $5from Wmart, mobil1 about $8-10 from Canadian Tire on sale a few weeks ago.
Canadian Tire has regular sales to help cost

I put full syntyhetic in at 4000kms and it's all Ill ever use. Basically whatever name brand that's on sale. Mobil 1, Castrol Edge, Quaker State etc. All good stuff and waay better than any conventional oil or blend. your biggest benefit will be in winter during cold starts. The full synthetic flows much better when cold, conventional turns to molasses.
As for filters, I get mine from Nissan, they have a check valve that prevents drain out when the engine is shut off (for the horizontal mounted filter in the 1.6L). That prevents the second or 2 of no pressure at startup.

I think I pay about $10, as for who makes it... Says "Nissan motor co. Ltd. Made in Japan". It's the exact part # filter my wife's '11 maxima uses in the 290 HP 3.5L. If nissan figures it's good enough for that beast I'm good with it on my 1.6.
Wix makes good filters, I've used them on my duramax diesel as recommended by users on that forum. I just know the nissan ones work well for the V so that's what I use.
