The bare bones base model (aka the stripped version) doesn't contain the chip. Anything above that does as part of the security features.

Dealer was pretty clear to me that even my base model has a chip in the key. I needed a spare, i got a non chipped key cut just for the door lock.

It's as basic as the 2012 sedan gets, no AC, has manual locks, windows, and 5spd. Only thing is the Canadian base model gets a tach. The starting price in Canada is $11798.
I was surprised when they said it had a chip, but aside from the rediculous cost of replacement keys I guess it's a bonus to have the extra security.
