I just clayed and waxed my 2009 Nissan Versa Hatchback. I was looking at the roof when I noticed a brown spot that looked like rust. Well I started going over it with the clay and cleaner and it didn't come off. So it is a rust spot but how is that possible with this new of a car? It's looks like a paint chip where rust has started. So now what do I do? I don't want to mess up my car fixing it and I really don't want to go to a bodyshop. Would it just be surface rust as I thought newer cars weren't supposed to rust?

Beemer/Frenchy: Can one of you post a photo of the paint/rust area? I wonder if it is oxidation of the metal under the paint? More of an alloy issue rather than moisture.

Yeah I can try too. As corrison resistant metal isn't supposed to rust lol.

I'm not driving my V for the next 1.5 weeks (my husband is doing a track day with it and wants to feel comfortable with it)...i'll take a pic when I get it back :D

Ya my lower front bumper is all mangled from the highway. Paint sucks but other than that no rust on her. Also had the under carriage checked and all is good :)

Yeah I have this too, mostly on my doors. Its harder to see on the red ones, but its probably there too. I am guessing that after market wheels, since they are almost always a little wider don't help, and throw up more grit and such. And combined with the already very thin paint on the car, its just a recipe for rust :( Still not sure what I am gonna do to fix mine, but I probably have 6-8 little spots like that on each side of my car.

Well, it would cover them up, but you would definitely see the little dots all over the side... the touch up paint from nissan kinda sucks. And, since it has already started to oxidize, just covering it up with paint won't 100% stop it from rusting more.

Have it fixed before it spreads.

Depending on the severity...
If it was a tiny spot...
I would scuff it up with a fine grit sanding paper then touch it up.

Just a few things that I have noticed over the past few years:

1) All cars today have sheet metal just thick enough to hold their shape, and NO MORE. (Never throw large buckets of water onto the roof of your car, NO KIDDING!)

2) All cars today, except for some very premium models, have very thin paints. Even the owners manual of your car says not to rub the paint too hard. They are NOT KIDDING either!

3) White and red colored paints tend to chalk up more, and should be very gently polished and waxed at least once every three months. (Polishing compound, very gentle, non-abrasive after washing to further clean and prepare the paint before waxing.)

4) Slapping some not-too-well-matched touch up paint on a small blemish is infinitely preferable to doing nothing to protect the metal.

5) Mechanical car washes are LIVING DEATH to the finish of ANY car.

6) Don't wash your car with dishwashing detergent; it removes the wax. Use car washing "shampoo".

7) Get the dirt on your car good and wet with water to soften the dirt before washing. Keep the sponge or cloth wet and clean while washing. Always wash very gently to remove the dirt. This is easy to do if the car's paint is well-protected by being covered with a good wax job.

8) The roof, hood and trunklid take the hardest beating in most climates. If you don't have time to properly polish and wax the whole car as often as it might be done, try to polish and wax those areas at least every three months.

9) If you have invested in a nose protector (bra) for the front part of the hood and the bumper area of your car, bear in mind that it should be removed and washed when you wash your car, or even more often, depending on the useage situation.

10) If taking care of your car seems like a big set of chores, remember that your car is, among other things, a big pile of YOUR MONEY once you have paid it off.

Changed out my rotors and pads, and everything is rusted under the factory rotors, seriously rusted, only had the car for 2 years, disappointing to say the least, looks like my old truck looked, and was driving that thing for 10 years!

I got a few rust spots from paint chips and a tree branch, for now, just used some clear nail polish, if you want color, use color polish for now. Since paint is so thin, and I need to fix damage anyway, gonna repaint whole car later with a thicker mix.

I have only had my Versa hatchback for 7 months with only 4,000 miles on it and the paint is coming off the bumper which appears to be plastic. Also, a big scratch of paint off the side on the door. I'm really surprised at how poorly the paint is holding up on this car. My Hyundai Elantra was 11 years old and the bumper (also plastic) looked better than what I have now at 7 months. I'm really disappointed in the paint. Any suggestions?

take it back to the dealer because you have a paint warranty that guarantees the paint on you car for 5 years they will have to fix the issue.

Thanks Alonsorules8- I will give that a try but wonder since it is on the upper side of the back bumper they will say it is "owner error" since it looks like it was scratched off unloading/loading into and out of the cargo area. There are other paint scratches on the side of the car as well. Sure it is from something hitting it but should not come off so easy.
