1) Make sure wheels are straight. Unplug the battery, and wait about 10mins.

2) On the back of the steering wheel are these caps. Take them off with your fingers or flat head.

3) Take the flat head and put it into the holes and push hard straight. It will feel like a type of spring. Take your other hand and feel for the airbag to move forward while pulling up slightly. Do this for both sides. Once released, take your hand and gently pull up on the airbag, It may feel still stuck, just pull a little harder.

4) Once removed, a yellow, orange, and green wire will be connected to it. Try to keep the airbag away from your body and face as much as you can while working on it. The green is for the horn, and the orange and yellow are airbag. Disconnect the green wire by just pulling it straight off. Now for the airbag wires. While holding the airbag in your one hand, take a pair of pliers and squeeze them on the black piece and pull straight up. Do this for both. The airbag is now freed. Place the airbag upright somewhere away from you.

5) Now is the cruise/audio connector. Just unplug that connector. I found the next step to be useful putting the steering wheel into it's locked position. Unscrew the bolt in the middle with a socket wrench, and remove the bolt. Now you can just simply wiggle the wheel back and forth, and the wheel will just pop off.

6) Replace with the new steering wheel and reverse the directions.

7) Enjoy!!

NOTE: This is for 1st gen. Versa. The difference between the 07-08 and 09-11, is the buttons are illuminated in 09-11 and needs two extra wires. But other then that it's all plug in play and the 07-08 steering wheels can be mounted anyways even without the extra two wires and still keep the cruise function. I wouldn't doubt it's reversible too! I transferred my cruise buttons so I keep the illuminated buttons. This was alot easier than I expected.

does your airbag light turn on though after unpluging the airbag though
No, cause the battery was disconnected and I waited about 10mins before doing any work, so basically the car doesn't know the airbag was removed, so it's all good.
I noticed the steering wheel before didn't have radio controls. Did the new wheel audio controls work or did you have to run any wires? And do you know if you can just get the audio controls and put them on the steering wheel?

Thanks for your help
From my understanding the 07-08 are more then likely to be pre-wired for audio controls. Starting in 09 they are not. Mine is an 09 and comparing the plug from the old and new steering wheel they are the same, and the wires that where missing in the old plug I took out of the new plug and popped them into the old plug. Now the plug is full of wires and plugged right in the clock spring. The wiring is my next step. Haven't done it yet. It looks like the clock spring has it together, and I think I know where the wires come out of the clock spring and to the radio, but I waiting for confirmation to know that's the right plug. As far as just the buttons, most people are selling the whole wheel cause the cruise and audio connections are on one plug and you would have to cut the wires. So they sell the whole wheel instead. Plus it's leather wrapped too!! I got mine for $100.
hi i have a 09 v hatch and i do not have the cruise control package but is my car pre wired ? so that i just have to buy a sterring wheel with the buttons and just plug and play ?
I will say this. I am more than positive the steering wheel area and clock spring is wired and ready to go for the buttons, but I don't know if it's wired from the clock spring to the car. Do you have the power package?
Can I ask where you found yours? I have been looking for awhile now. I talked to the dealer and they said the have the curise bluetooth combo swtich for 100. But of course I have to order it to see if it is the right part. Thanks for the quick response and your help...
Well I checked ebay everyday for like 2 weeks, and finally one showed up for 3 days only. I was the only bidder and I got it. The plus is I contacted bob from versaspeed and hes gonna give me the wiring diagram so I can wire up the buttons. No matter what year you buy, they will all be plug and play, the only difference is the 07-08 are not illuminated. Mines not illuminated, but the cruise is, cause I popped the wires out of the new plug, and placed them in my old plug so I could keep my illuminated cruise buttons.
Good question!
I have an 07 hatch with the same package and I was wondering the same thing, can we just buy the steering wheel with the buttons and just plug and play? :thumb2:
Well this is what im finding out now. As far as I know, the steering wheel and column look to be wired and ready to go. Wiring it to the radio is the next issue im finding out. as far as 09 S models, we are not wired for it. As soon as I know when, ill let you guys know. But im still waiting for bob to respond.

I need you to do me a favor, since yours is an 07, take out your radio and see if you have more than your main and antenna plugs behind the radio tapped up some where. The 07-08 models were prewired with alot of things if you got the SL or power package on S, and it stopped in 09.
I got the ensemble option plus that what they call it here in quebec it include the A/C electric windows electric door lock. Is this the package you are talking about ?
Yeah that's about it. The power package seems to be the one thing you need to do alot to the versa. Idk for sure, but I would say you might be able to put buttons in just fine, but you probably don't have the equipment for it. Idk for sure.
I had another question for you, have you heard from your friend bob about how to wire the steering wheel controls. I was able to find the audio swtich itself. I am just hoping it is all wired up to the radio. I can say that on the back of the radio it had the two harness plugged into it. The main power hanress with speaker wires, a smaller one, then the antenna.

I am hoping it is prewired, but if not I may ask for some help once you figure yours out. If not I will have a switch for sale if you know anyone haha.

Thanks for all you help man...
I havent heard from him, but I did shoot him an email today. We talked last about a wk ago. I asked him this time to compare connections with mine, I think I know where it's coming from, but I don't wanna do any damage by inserting the wires in the open slot of the connector. From what I know, the steering wheel controls plug into the clock spring, and from the clock spring it goes into the main harness of the radio. It's just two wires. They represent up and down. The chip in the audio control buttons send out what functions are pushed to the radio. That's why only two wires are needed. But there is 3 wires, and I dunno if the 3rd wire is for bluetooth or just a ground. I assume a ground.

As far as the extra plug you have, I believe that is probably for the amp, but Idk for sure.

This is where I found information on what connectors to use, on this module. Just type in the information, and choose the 1.8 with 6 speaker configuration. This will give you an idea on where to connect the radio's steering wheel controls. I looked at my radio's plug and everything looked the same, and the number of slot's matched up, so the main harness is where it should be. Plus where im supposed to tap into the wires, the wires aren't there in my car.

I have wired the audio buttons, and everything is A-ok. It was really easy, and would encourage anyone who wants to do it. Here's my how to.

Pictures are back
There is no wiring work. The old plug is the same plug for the leather wrap with audio/cruise. Just unplug the old one, remove the wheel, replace with new wheel, and plug new plug in. That simple. If you need to know about wiring audio to radio, I have a how too on that as well, but you saw that ealier, :) What stuff is hard to find? Go to ebay and look for a SL leather wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise buttons. Get a socket set, and a flat head screwdriver. Thats all you need. The steering wheel may be hard to find, but I looked everyday for 2 weeks before I found one.
Id like to get a hold of a 350Z steering wheel
That would be nice. I wounder if they use the same clockspring? If so that would be just as easy. I believe the airbag connections are the same.
