How To: Remove 1st gen. Versa Steering Wheel

1) Make sure wheels are straight. Unplug the battery, and wait about 10mins.

2) On the back of the steering wheel are these caps. Take them off with your fingers or flat head.

3) Take the flat head and put it into the holes and push hard straight. It will feel like a type of spring. Take your other hand and feel for the airbag to move forward while pulling up slightly. Do this for both sides. Once released, take your hand and gently pull up on the airbag, It may feel still stuck, just pull a little harder.

4) Once removed, a yellow, orange, and green wire will be connected to it. Try to keep the airbag away from your body and face as much as you can while working on it. The green is for the horn, and the orange and yellow are airbag. Disconnect the green wire by just pulling it straight off. Now for the airbag wires. While holding the airbag in your one hand, take a pair of pliers and squeeze them on the black piece and pull straight up. Do this for both. The airbag is now freed. Place the airbag upright somewhere away from you.

5) Now is the cruise/audio connector. Just unplug that connector. I found the next step to be useful putting the steering wheel into it's locked position. Unscrew the bolt in the middle with a socket wrench, and remove the bolt. Now you can just simply wiggle the wheel back and forth, and the wheel will just pop off.

6) Replace with the new steering wheel and reverse the directions.

7) Enjoy!!

NOTE: This is for 1st gen. Versa. The difference between the 07-08 and 09-11, is the buttons are illuminated in 09-11 and needs two extra wires. But other then that it's all plug in play and the 07-08 steering wheels can be mounted anyways even without the extra two wires and still keep the cruise function. I wouldn't doubt it's reversible too! I transferred my cruise buttons so I keep the illuminated buttons. This was alot easier than I expected.

I have a question about this: I have a 2012 Versa S HB, is it possible it comes prewired for Cruise Control and Audio?

Hello TechGuy8,

You are on the right track; just pull from the top harder. I just replaced mine today. I used two 5/16 wooden dowels, used my knee to hold on one after it pushed the left spring and used another one with my right hand to push the right retaining clip. I then used my left hand to pull from the top and it popped out easily. My biggest problem was to pop it back after I have done replacing everything. Eventually I had to first push the right clip back, pressed the right side of the airbag onto it, then did the same on the left clip and the entire airbag clicked back in. It was rewarding to do this job myself. Thanks again to Versa 2009 and dovi04 for their encouragement.

Thank you for the info.

I know what I did wrong. I pushed the left clip and the left side popped up. Then, I push the right clip and the right clip popped up. I was pulling the air bag without pushing both clips at the same time. I pushed so hard that my fingers hurt for few days. LOL I will push both clips and pulling the air bag at the same time.

Update 1:
I tried again to get the airbag off couple of days ago. I was able to get it off fairy easy without pushing both clips at the same time. I did the same procedure which I used 1 month ago. The only difference is the outside temperature. The temperature was -15°C a month ago and 20°C two days ago. At higher temperature, the spring clips do not hold the airbag too tightly - just my guess. My airbag warning light is gone now.

If someone is looking for more tutorial can check this website. They are making custom made steering wheels and uploads some tutorials about how to remove some kind of steering wheels.

I have both springs pushed in, top edge out about 1/4" to 1/2", bottom stem doesn't budge, seams at the side opened at top to close at the bottom.
Can't pull it out no matter how much I pull.

Pull out and down. Be careful that you dont pull too far, or you will damage the Spiral Cable or airbag connectors.

Be aware that if you've had the driver airbag recall done on your car, removing it is MUCH harder. Part of that procedure includes wrapping some tape around parts that makes the gap smaller. You'll be pulling with enough force where when it comes free you better be ready to stop pulling or you'll rip the spiral cable wires clear out.

Hey, I know this is an old post, but I have an 09 versa hatchback with cruise control and no Bluetooth. You said 09+ have lighted steering wheel controls but mine don't light up. Could the LEDs just be burned out?
