The center of the Nissan Versa's wheels rest on the axle hub. In areas with harsh winters and road salt the wheels can become rusted quite bad to the hub and almost impossible to remove.

Tools:

* Penetrating Oil: Kano Kroil, PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench or WD-40 (Kano Kroil is the strongest)
* 8 lb Sledge Hammer
* Safety Glasses


Procedure:

1. Spray penetrating oil around the center axel hub where it meets the wheel, then let sit for 15 minutes.

2. Apply the parking brake and loosen the wheel's lug nuts.

3. Jack the car up so the tire is barely off the ground. (See owners manual for jack points)

4. In addition to the jack, support the car with either jack stands or a cinder block for safety. (Do not skip this step)

5. Remove the lugs nuts completely, then take two lugs nuts and hand tighten them only 2-3 turns on diagonally opposite studs. (The lug nuts should be barely on, leaving plenty of room for the wheel to come off the axle hub)

6. With your safety glasses on, take the 8 lb sledge hammer and lay down behind the car with your feet in the direction of the wheel you are trying to remove. Swing the sledge hammer at the bottom rubber portion of the tire. Do not hit the rim. When it comes off you will hear it and the rim will move. If it does not come off, swing harder. It may take a few swings to get it off. (Since you are close to the ground, watch your knuckles if you are swinging over a rough surface like concrete and wear gloves if necessary)

7. Once it is loose, straighten the tire and remove the two lug nuts holding it on to get the wheel off.


Prevention:

To help prevent this from happening again (or at least make it somewhat easier to get off next time), clean the axle hub surface with Brake Cleaner (WD-40 can be used) and a wire brush multiple times, then wipe clean with a rag. When putting the tire back on, torque your lug nuts to 113 N·m (83 ft-lb) using a torque wrench, do not use air tools.

Little anti-seize on the hub too, after it has been cleaned.
Excellent write up and thanks for sharing. Based on experience I cannot stress strongly enough to use anti seize on the hubs particularly when using steel wheels for winter. A couple of those small packets sold for spark plugs should me more than enough to cover 4 wheels.

BTW, always check the torque on the lug nuts even after a dealer or a service shop worked on your car's tires/wheels. I had my tires rotated at a local dealership recently and found they must have used their biggest impact wrench on my wheels. Almost hurt my back just to loosen them. Good thing I did not get a flat in the meantime, I would not have been able to loosen them on the road.
