I saw that a Nissan dealer in Greece put together a turbo kit for the HR16DE. I have talked to them before, and they believe it will also work on a Versa/Tiida. Not sure if it will work with newer-style HRs, though. Figured I'd post up their kit. I told them about our forum, and maybe they will chime in. The kit, I'm sure, is pricey, in the $3k range, I bet.

The engine layout looks pretty much identical to the one in my note, so I don't see why it shouldn't work. The only problem I do foresee is that we lack an aftermarket for forged pistons and reinforced internals, so I don't see this kit being able to produce much power on a stock engine
It made just under 150 brake horsepower. Not sure how much you want to make or how much the stock internals can handle, but I've turbocharged another Nissan, and that car was sold running at 218k miles. There are tons of fits and Yaris running turbo on stock internals. With a conservative tune, I doubt you will have too many issues. But if the boost bug bites and you turn the psi up, I'm sure you will blow up the little engine that could.
Super clean setup! How much psi, and what is that turbo equivalent to? I didn't know BorgWarner turbos were Chinese :frown5:

I just want a turbo manifold for the mr18, and I can fabricate the rest myself (if I ever went that route)
The vehicle ran at .3 bar (4.5 psi).

Borg warner makes turbo's all over the world.

Looks like a KO3 from a VW... Those are good numbers for only 4.5psi, do you know if it has any supporting mods? I would like to it see with with full exhaust, intake, and 10 psi.

not really looking into it for myself as much as i was just trying to avoid people thinking they could slap this on their HR16DE and turn up the boost thinking they are going to make big power and then blowing up the engine and wondering why it happened. really good setup they have going there though and hopefully they will think about shipping them out to us, heck any aftermarket for the versa is a good thing. i know personally that just the intake on mine alone provided a pretty good gain and makes me think this engine has alot more potential than what Nissan tunes it for which is mostly for gas savings and not performance.
What a sweet little kit. And if the price stays under 3k with tuning that makes it even sweeter. Stock internals probably couldn't take more then 10psi and the stock maf sensor won't work past 4.5 psi. Rev up sells a 4 bar maf for a couple hundred bucks. And if you do pop a piston or however you blow the engine a replacement is cheap here in Florida.

I think it was all stock besides the turbo. Even used the stock airbox. More info can be seen here but you need to use a translator. Δοκιμή: Qashqai 1.6L light turbo by Nissan Κυριακούδης

I would hope people are smarter then just upping the boost but you never know. Everyone should educate themselves on how turbo work before taking something like this on. I suggest reading Corky Bell's book called Maximum Boost. It's old now and some info might be a little dated but it's definitely a good place to start.

No one knows what stock internals can handle. Only way to find out is to blow one up :D. As far as the stock maf only being able to handle 4.5 psi do you have any sources for this? I would think stock injectors would run out before the maf.

Engines are really cheap for these cars and plentiful. That is a plus for sure.
Looks promising, only time will tell.

I'm just going by past experiences with Hondas. Every time I pushed past 10 psi on a b series it would fail. Usually at the ring lands, sometimes the head bolts. What ever was weakest at the time. And I'm just guessing about the maf sensor because when ausi-tiida ( I think that's his name) pushed past 4.5 he seemed to describe just such issues. And you're probably right about the injectors. Stock b series risk injector lock running at that efficiency. An upgrade to 450 cc injectors cured that. I will have to Google what cc our stock injectors are. I bet most of this information is on the juke forums. They've probably blown an engine or two already turning the boost up! I feels good to see all these new parts and kits being developed. It's nice to have options.

every engine is different. I come from boosted SR20's. Those things when turbo charged can take a beating. Stock injectors (259cc) at 4bar of fuel can put down about 200whp. The stock maf is good for little over 200 unless you have a 2000-2002 maf then it's good for over 300. I do recall now aus-tiida having issues with maf though.

Not sure how researching the MR16DDT will compare with an HR16DE. I don't see any shared parts when I look them up. It would seem they are two totally different engines. If they are similar though that would be good news because there are tuners pushing over 200whp with a tune and a couple of bolt ons. I doubt the HR16DE could get to that level but it would be nice.

I haven't heard back from the greece guys so who knows what's going on. I would love for someone to pick up one of these kits and fit it.
I recall a while back trying to see if I could get a custom turbo built for my car and got in contact with a shop that told me that RB injectors were comparable with my engine, and needed to support any type of turbo boost. I have the 1.8 though.

you also have to remember though too that the SR20 was an iron block engine where most of Nissans engines are now all aluminum including the block, as i recall iron blocks can take alot more of a beating especially when it comes to boost.
Sr20 was all aluminum.
Sr20 was all aluminum.
my mistake, was thinking of the CA based engines that pre dated the SR lol
Just got another email from the seller. More info found here and some more pics Κυριακούδης Group - Βελτιώσεις

You will have to translate it to read it.
I got another email as far as pricing goes. I asked for the whole kit price and price for just the manifold but he gave me a price on IC pipes, manifold, and downpipe. Might be a little language barrier there. But those are all the custom pieces in the kit. So really everything besides that would be off the shelf.

Hi,
The total cost for the exhaust manifold, down pipe, and intercooler
pipes is 800€ with VAT. In order to calculate the shipping cost you have
to give me your address.
Thanks a lot.
Apostolos Kyriakoudis
I'm emailing back with my address to figure out shipping. I'm assuming it's going to be close to $1500 USD for those parts to an address in the US. Pricey
He responded

Good morning

The shipping cost is 150€. I have attached a photo of the kit.
I would like to inform you that I have already modify several HR16
Qashqai. Some of them have run more than 100.000Km after the
installation of turbo without any problem.

Thanks.

I think I have gone as far as I'm going to go with this. So if someone really wants to turbo their HR16DE you now have an option. I would love to see a turbo Note. If someone does that I'll make you some free "ST killer" decals and maybe even a cool custom stainless steel emblem.
