I think I need a valve adjustment - how to avoid a dealer?

Hello! Hoping someone can help... I have about 68K miles on my 2008 Versa, and it is making some valve noise - especially when cold. I read on here (I believe) that it needs an adjustment around this time. My longtime mechanics also said possibly 'valve tappet.' ???

I've been going to them for 20 years - they are GOLD - but they don't do engine work. They said I would most likely have to go to a dealer since they may need Nissan-specific tools.

Has anyone else had this experience? I'm thinking of going to a dealer in another county if I have to, as I'm not at all impressed with the one here. :(

To tell the truth, I wasn't aware that this engine had shim-under-bucket solid type lifters.
This style requires removal of the camshaft if adjustment is required. To only check is relatively simple.
I swapped an exhaust valve shim on my Honda 919 during my 16k routine. Methodical work is the key here. If you have a service manual, it makes it much easier (and safer).

I will check this out this weekend - thanks so much!
