Less expensive source for key cutting

I recently bought a used 2009 Versa SL, which came with the usual two keys and remote lock/unlock fobs (one for my key ring and one for my wife's). My usual procedure for all my cars is to have a spare key cut and stored away in case of emergency. I don't need a spare remote fob, merely the key. However, in this case the keys contain a transponder chip and need to be cut and programmed by a dealer or high-end locksmith. These are outrageously expensive ($50 at the dealer for one key). Is there a cheaper source for this?

Also, the owner's manual refers to an alphanumeric key code that comes with the car and which should be stored separately in a safe place. Of course the former owner (himself the second owner) knows nothing about this. Is there a way to discover the code from the key, and again is there a relatively inexpensive source for this?

I did receive some sort of a code from the dealership when I purchased the vehicle (I purchased mine new) and I have kept that paperwork. Perhaps a quick call to Nissan Canada will give you the answer you need? If you have your VIN # they should be able to assist you in that.
