Like the post says I'm currently looking for a new to me daily. I'm currently between a 08 versa SL hatch 6 speed or a 07 sentra SER spec v 6 speed. I do 50/50 city and highway driving and I'm liking for something that'll last me a good 5 years. I'm looking for good mpg and a little fun when I want to. I owned a 06 spec before so I know what to expect there. It was a great car but the versa is a different animal. I like it's aesthetics. The interior design and hatch appeal to me more because I was never a fan of the B16 chassis looks but you can't deny the performance of the SER. Is there enough performance to gain with the versa?

I purchased a 2015 Versa S for my daughter, but I drive it quite a bit because I enjoy the fun of a manual transmission.

It is a wonderful car for short trips and city driving. However it is a light vehicle with a small engine, so I would be hesitant to drive on a high speed freeway with tractor trailers all around.

So if you plan on a mix of city and highway driving, the slightly larger Sentra with more horsepower might be a better choice.

I forgot to mention I'm currently driving a 05 miata turbo daily. I'm upgrading to a 4 door. So I know all about getting next to 18 wheeler tires that are bigger than you in the highway lol I owned a 06 sentra specV a few years ago before this and loved it. I'm also curious about comfort on longer drives. The 06 spec on a 5 hour drive was plenty comfy for being aggressive seats. My 06 ram makes my feet go numb because the metal frame of the seat is right where your leg and butt rest and pinches a nerve

I have not owned a Sentra so I cannot comment on it, but I drive Versa 5 speed sedan, and was taking long freeway travels (a few hours, a few hundred miles) with a passenger and fully loaded trunk, and I feel it is completely feasible for it.

The only thing is that for Versa 5 speed the RPMs are kinda higher at the top gear then for for other cars I drove, so it runs 4,000 rpm at 80 m/h. Though it could be lower for 6 speed Versa...

I don't doubt the rpm. My miata does 4k at 72mph with its 4.10s I'm looking into a 1st gen. I managed to find a 08 SL fully loaded with a 6 speed and it's well below my budget so I'm not sure how to take that for durability. Reading about the mr20 swap kind of excites me too. I really need to drive one but the closest 6 speed one for sale is 2 hours away

4K for 80Mph? isn't abnormal?

For me I do get 80Mph for 3K. I'm not an expert but this is what I get from My TIIDA 2012 Sedan.

Since we are talking about Nissans your best bet is to avoid the cvt. Sounds like both are 6 speed stick shifts? You may have more aftermarket parts for the sentra vs the versa if you are in to modding it.

Oh yea I wouldn't consider a cvt car unless it's a 13 up Altima or maxima. The new cvt isn't bad but performance you want a manual.

Dont get me wrong, cvt equipped vehicles do good overall for mpg and best use of torque vs hp, however for someone who likes to drive or drives hard the cvt will let you down. I many times use the stick to control my speed in slower areas and zones so I do not get a ticket. I also use it to drive using 1 pedal to accelerate and brake, although the braking effort isnt as strong as it is with other vehicles Ive driven.

My honda had several modes which made the cvt usable for all of above. It had a normal, eco and sport mode. I used eco mode for long traveling, sport for stop n go traffic and normal for steady bumper to bumper traffic. For beating someone off the line to merge or change lanes I used sequential mode where the cvt behaves like it had several fixed ratios like a traditional automatic.

Usually it lugged the engine at 80% load in eco and normal. In eco the throttle response was delayed and ac wasnt as cool. In normal mode ac was colder and increased throttle response. In sport mode ac was even colder and no auto stop plus engine was only loaded to 60% so better throttle response still.

In sequential mode it felt faster using the butt dyno, but I see online where other cars with the same features have the normal mode with the bests 0-60 times.

Hopefully Nissan will fix this cvt issue. Id like to get an altima one day with the v6 and awd, but as is Ill go to toyota or honda granted neither of them off a v6 anymore or awd. :frown Guess that leaves Suburoo!!!!!!!!>:D

I actually just accepted a job offer to go back to work as a Nissan tech. I was working with them 08-13. We saw less CVT issues on v6 than 4 cyl. Also this dealer offers me a loaner car for training so distance driving isn't a thing anymore. I think I'll go with the 6 speed hatch and look into doing intake, exhaust, header and MR20 swap maybe work the MR20 a bit and lower the car. Good thing is I can buy the one I'm lookiing at with cash. No payments to worry about while undertaking a new job

Great news!!!!

Yeah, with the new altima and new cvt its getting like 40 mpg with the larger engine and being a larger car. Sounds like a win-win. Reading about cvt problems with other people makes me hold back. Plus Ive driven a few rental altimas and the cvt has a wonky behavior over regular cars and even my cvt equipped honda.

The last one I drove at lower loads the rpms would dip vs ride with light throttle. Then under medium throttle the rpm would climb if I held the throttle. The honda was like a weed eater. It seems there was a direct connection to the throttle so I could hold the engine at its peak torque rpm and let the cvt do its thing to get me up to speed. I use to hold the honda at 3 positions. At the ivtec engagement of 2750, peak torque at like 4200 then of course WOT. >:D

I loved carpooling and holding the engine at 2750 and hear my coworkers ask when is your car going to shift gears?

I started Nissan in 08 so I grew up in a sense in the Nissan era where cvt were becoming common. I'm used to them. Try driving a dodge caliber 180HP 2.0 world engine with cvt. They buck and jerk allot

I had a honda insight 2nd gen with a clutch pack vs torque converter. It was a trick to drive and required frequent cvt fluid changes for a smooth engagement. I think they refer to it as an analog cvt where as the prius uses a digital cvt with tis twin electric motors and direct gear vs a steel belt.

I drive a 1st gen insight 5 speed... That thing was weird. If you didn't hold the clutch down during a stop it'd freak out
