ive heard of this happening to 2 other people. not really common, i guess it really just depends on where you live
My Exhaust rusted off. lol
Went to pull the Versa into the garage to change the oil, and I noticed it was a little louder. Surprisingly not all that much louder. Jack up the back of the car to find out that the pipe that comes out of the muffler thats about 10 inchs long broke where it connects to exhaust next the rear spring. Thankfully I have a welder, so I just unbolted the flange that was still bolted to the exhaust, pulled the muffler down, and welded it all back into place and its as good as new, to a point.
Anybody else had a problem like this? There was no impact marks, it was just rusted through.

This will be very common in a year or two for people living in the rusty states. Every stock exhaust I've ever had rusted off.
I hope this doesn't happen.
I've had lots of experience with exhausts in the rust belt.
OEM steel ones can rust suprisingly fast. Some manufacturers use higher grade steels with chromium added, but steel used in entry-level cars (Versa) tend to have exhausts made of lower grade steel.
Auto parts store exhaust pieces are also usually made of low grade steel to keep the price low, but cat-backs and higher end stainless systems, although pricey, can last and last.
I had an exhaust made by Stebro once and it was of unbelievable quality. Almost a shame to bolt it underneath the car.

I really hope it will not happen again in the future. I also want to get a new exhaust tip because this is the problem of my car. I'm planning to get a dual exhaust tips for better performance and lesser overheating. I didn't notice it at first til' I found it out after dissembling the muffler and the whole exhaust system.

Yea unfortunately if you live somewhere they use road salt, say goodbye to the factory exhaust in a few years. Just get an exhaust shop to cut out the flange and weld in a patch
This appears to be an issue just before and after the muffler. Mine rusting pre-muffler but not through yet. Can't wait for upgrade
One more reason to upgrade to DC =)
Im not intending to put a bump on this thread but I guess im on the same issue. I was going to work when I heard a loud sound directly from the exhaust. I stop for a while to check what that noise was and I finally discovered that the exhaust pipe has a flange and I guess the whole exhaust was rusted. Got it repaired for $100 and replace the whole exhaust parts for additional amount.soon enough

I still can't see exactly where mine is rusted. I hope it's not the pipe with the cats. My car sounds like crap and I really don't want to dump money into it but I probably will have to soon. I would like to get it fixed up with something higher quality then what was on it but I'm afraid it will be louder then stock. I really loved how quiet my car was. People constantly ask if it's on or electric lol.
That's what told us something was wrong with mine, she was running really loudly ... Then within a week of that the exhaust was being held up by the hitch. We knew it was the exhaust at that point. Might be rusted right in between the flange ends, like a rusted out steel gasket or donut, making it very difficult to see. If the exhaust is still cool, you can carefully put your hand over it and feel exhaust blowing out. Can exaggerate this by blocking the exhaust outlet itself.
Did this this morning and still couldn't pinpoint it. On decel I get a slight backfire. I can't find the hole for the life of me. The whole exhaust system needs a replacement (as told by the mechanic), which includes catalytic convertor, intermediate pipe, and muffler. As per mechanic, whole system seems to be rusted and it might drop anytime (with flange or something). I am trying to wrap my head around the cost that is going to be around 1000. Would it take this much to fix? Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
