They're based on the ESC (electronic stability control), LDW (lane departure warning) and some other advanced safety features on the gauges. Not sure why, but they're optional on low end vehicles. Basically, the car has some sensors and can detect if you're drifting outside a lane. Some of the BMWs have that.


The forward collision warning (FCW) indicates how far behind you are from a vehicle and gives you time to slow down before you collide behind the vehicle in front. Check out the 2009 Infiniti FX50S, there are examples given in the pictures in the link below.
